Am I the only person finding this game easier than FO3? Maybe it's experience, but I was getting killed every couple of minutes when I first played FO3 and was in the early levels. On this one I've died about three times so far, and one of those was because I lobbed a stick of dynamite at an enemy standing right in front of me, thus ensuring I too was killed in the blast.

The correctional facility was the first (marked) location I went to. That may have been a mistake....so there I was, high on success after taking on 6 armed powder gayers, feeling invincible in my armoured disguise and marching confidently towards the prison. I arrived and had a little chat with the guard, he wanted caps so got a faceful of the business end of my shotgun. I got through the place with no trouble really, no-one tried shooting me until I got to the building where I assume the head powder ganger is and then the shit hit the fan. As soon as they saw me they attacked me, despite the disguise and baring in mind I had just got to lvl 2 I got absolutely fucked, I could've thrown everything I had at them and used all my stimpaks but I don't think it would've been worth it. In the end I made a run for it back out to the wastes. I'll go back soon though I think, probably on my way to NV, at which point I'll incinerate the lot of them.

The uniforms from each group are pretty handy to have, I robbed the NCR blind dressed as a Legion Recruit, they shot at me but I got changed into some NCR kit behind a rock and when I came out, they all walked away. It's pretty cool! Until you forget to get changed back into regular armour and walk into an opposing camp. Oops. Much death ensued.

Erm, I feel pretty bad not spoilering stuff, are we not doing that now....? *Looks at posts above* Or is it just because this is first town stuff and everyone who has been playing has done those quests? If we do, can someone remind me how to do spoiler tags? (Phone posting is fail).

I'm now swinging between being wildly impressed with the scale of this game, and grumpily disappointed when the scale proves to be illusionary.

For example - there's tons of places where there's enormous cityscapes, but they're almost entirely boarded up frontages:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Boulder City was the first great disappointment. Two buildings and a small encounter? WTF? I know it was meant to be destroyed in the fighting, but still. The outskirts of Vegas, too - so much real estate that actually contains nothing at all.

On the other hand

So many of the game locations are just brilliant. When I realised why Novac was called that, I actually laughed out loud at the telly. And Vault 22 is creepy as fuck

Yeah cheers Craster :) My mate told me last night. I want to stumble across it tho tbh. I put in 14 hours yesterday and didn't really do that much apart from up my levels and build ammo and caps. I needed to put in the spadework.

Oh hey, it's a single joke about a video game that equally applied to Fallout 3 and I'm fairly sure Oblivion (possibly even earlier Elder scrolls games) dragged out over 4 panels.

Hilarious.

I'm idolized by the Novac community! I also killed that "old lady scrapyard" woman because she wanted to charge me 500 caps for something and I was TWO speech points off bargaining for a discount. Shot that bitch in the face. Better off dead any ways.

I have me a Boone now. Also, the dialogue in this game is genuinely really funny. It's miles ahead of Fallout 3.

Argh, it keeps offering me really tempting devious choices. I'm going to have to play this more than once to see the really evil stuff.

Boone is as hard as a lump of concrete. I'm currently very stuck and need 100% science and lockpick to progress. So I am going to have to walk around killing things.

This game is miles better than Fallout 3. I don't want to knock Bethesda because they basically had to invent it, but Obsidian have definitely taken the baton and ran with it.

Absolutely fantastic stuff. And it's miles bigger too. 32 hours in on this playthrough and I have miles to go. I reakon I've only found about 40% of the locations and my quests are all piled up.

A decent face-off at Eurogamer today.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digit ... s-face-off

Unsurprisingly the PC version wins hands down (albeit with a couple of caveats), and as ever, both the 360 and PS3 really show their age.

The sooner we get proper HD consoles instead of the pretend ones we're lumped with at the moment, the better.

It's a shame the PS3 is so shit. Microsoft has seen it as a very low threat level and just decided to sit on what they have instead of pushing it.

I've been out of the console race for years now (last one I got was a Gamecube on release day) but are there even any new ones rumoured?

Eventually it will push people to PCs I reakon (well, some at least). Crysis 2 could well do that, I know the original did. Nice flurry of PCs being built when that released.

Not as far as I'm aware.

It's a shame because both the 360 and PS3 are clearly at the limits of what they can do, neither of them can push out a complex game such as Fallout 3 at 720p and maintain 30FPS, let alone 60FPS, and even that's with graphical compromises being made all over the place.

It's not a criticism of them as such, they're both years old now and are easily out-punched by a second hand PC costing £250, as you'd expect as the 360's specification was nailed down back in 2004.

A mate of mine who is by no means a techno-geek PC fanboy (like I am :D) has stopped buying/playing 360 games because 'they look shit' - specifically he was very disappointed with DIRT2 and then that new F1 game on the 360, which he then went on to buy on the PC.

Fact is that neither the 360 or the PS3 are what I'd call 'HD consoles' - the sooner they're both carted off to the junkyard in the sky, the better.

Just killed Cook-Cook and am now looking for a way to get to Benny without spending 2000 caps or finding a passport. Need NCR garb for the monorail, methinks.

I for one am kinda happy that we have a bit of respite from the buy a new console every 5 years carry on. Aye, it'd be nice to have supershithot graphics, but at the same time I'm happy with what I've got (Plus I'm a bit skint the now anyway :DD)

I put my gun away and ran like a cunt. I was almost tempted to rewind my save game and try taking off my armor and running like a cunt but I don't think it would do any good.

According to the dude you return to something could/should have been done about it earlier but the million dorrar question will always be what?

As a side note has any one managed to totally side with the NCR? I'm wondering who you can side with to get the ending on the advert (blowing up NV and walking away).

Right now I'm sided with Mr House but I have just been sent a stark warning on my quests.. Side with him and lose NCR support. And this time around I wanted to side with them.

I'd be happy with the 'power' of the current gen consoles for at least another couple of years. Fact is, most people couldn't give a shit about badass ninja PC graphical capabilities, myself included. I have a capable PC and I still buy all multiformat stuff for my 360, and will continue to do so.

The only thing I'd want from a new console would be the ability to have more characters/cars on the screen and bigger worlds or levels.

Except, given the extra power, devs will choose instead to increase the poly count and still have a street in Times Square with only six cars and ten pedestrians.

So you're referring to realism then (massive draw distances, more objects and better physics?)

That would be better graphics then.

See my argument about graphics being important in some games and bettering the experience.

OK, after a (very) slow start, I'm beginning to get a feel for this. I've got everyone in Goodsprings on board which was a bit odd, as it went "You don't have the stats to persuade me, but I'll sell you a book that can temporarily boost your stats so... you can persuade me."

Oh, and do the books have any relevance?

They do earlier in the game or on things you decide you don't want. I suck at explosives for example so I carry a book with me :)
