I played both demos last night and I'm officially torn.

FIFA 11 is great, but that's because FIFA 10 was great and this is exactly the chuffing same. It's a proper EA annual update job and it appears they've settled back into their groove.

PES 2011 seems really really fucking good. I need more unbiased opinions on it to corroborate my evidence, but at first glance it looks as though they're finally delivering on their promises. The animation is really fluid and it looks great. The ball physics seems a lot more realistic than FIFA's as well. It's much slower than FIFA too.

Check them both out and discuss!

I've already preordered FIFA 11. I've never really enjoyed PES when I've tried it so unless FIFA was really terrible I wouldn't switch to it. I also find that more people I know and play with get FIFA so it is easy to have a game with them.

Downloading them both now, I'll try to offer an unbiased opinion on PES because I used to absolutely love it, but it's just been getting worse and worse over the last few years whilst FIFA seems to be getting better.

:this: FIFA 10 was when I finally switched away from the PES games, but I'll give them both a go.

First impressions are that it's quite nice.
I'm 1-0 down, but I feel like it's my fault (although I'm trying to remember all the controls).
My one major concern is that the game has stopped twice for about half a second, but only the display stopped, not the actual game, so suddenly everything has jumped around on screen. That's not good.

I should probably point out that this is PES I'm talking about.

2-0 down after the first half, mainly because my keeper keeps fisting every shot that comes his way back into the danger area.
It has paused 6 times so far.

I really want to like PES, it seems like there's a good game under it and I was definitely getting back into it by the end. In fact, all I wanted to do was play another match, but instead I had to watch a video for about 6 hours before I decided I'd be better off quitting to the dashboard and reloading the demo. Why do this?

fifa11 seems to have fixed the irrititating crossing in 09 and 10 (well maybe i wasn't able to do good crossing, but now and in '08 it is all fine)

pes seems to include the libertadores, which is very nice..

I think FIFA 11 is a fair bit different from the last one. Much more compared to the changes between 09 and 10.

Looks like the passing is sorted, no more pinball style quick one touch passing all the way up the field.
The computer in defense seems alot tougher, not as easy to get in behind them, and in 6 games on world class I only managed to score twice from open play.
It also seems that they've toned down the speed a bit in the ball, shots and passes don't seem to go as fast as usual, and I was finding it difficult to do my usual blammers. Also it seems like the chip shots aren't going to be as easy
I'd imagine the slower shots has been brought in because of the new be a keeper mode.

You can play as the keeper in the arena if you didn't realise. Just press back then change sides. Left stick to move and right stick to dive. The face buttons do some other bits and bobs as well.

Whaa? There are some subtle good changes including the passing you mentioned, but it really is just the same game otherwise. Differences between 09 and 10 were far more obvious! IMHO LOLS FFS

Ridiculous.

FIFA11: played it twice. Won both games 3-1. The AI scored a free kick each time but offered no other threat. I could have scored 10 if it wasn't for the post and super-heroic goalie.

PES11: if you want to win over the FIFA players, let them configure the fucking controls. Still, what I attempted to play of it seemed alright.

Can't be bothered with either. EA got it right with Euro 2008. Everything since is unnecessary.

Just had a quick blast on the new PES. It warms my heart mightily to play a new version of PES that isn't just a slightly worse version of a game that I've played before. It's probably the PES we should have had four years ago rather than the one we're due now, but for the first time in... four years, I'll almost certainly be picking it up the week it comes out.

Yep I've pretty much decided I'm leaving FIFA this year (at least until it drops significantly in price) and going for PES. There's no denying that FIFA is a bloody good game of footy these days, but the changes apparent in the demo are so minor, I just don't see the point in bothering. The lack of ping-pong passing is a good improvement, but I'm not paying £40 for that.

edit: Just loaded up PES 09 to remind myself of how shit it was, and my word it's awful. PES 11 makes it look like one of the early 3D-era FIFA games.

Still not got round to playing the FIFA demo, but I own 09 and 10, and still haven't really given that much attention to 10, so 11 will have to be a vast improvement (or very cheap) to make me want to pick it up. On the other hand, I haven't bought a PES since 2008 and I've been aching to buy a new one, but they've all been rubbish.

i suppose that sums up my feelings too, it seems at least fresh, whil;e fifa 11 doesn't seem to do muych for me 10 didn't, and the added libertadores somehow makes me feel warm, maybe i jsut had enough of playing inter and barca.. and if you guys have it, i have some opposition as well.

Sweet, at least a few of you are getting it, so that's good for some online play. Is it a completely new engine for PES this year? I didn't play 10 so I don't know if they updated the engine last year or not, but it's definitely not the "high-res" PS2 engine that was present in 08 and 09.

I'm really missing the "hold down LB" to make players run ahead of the player with the ball for through passes in PES. FIFA has spoiled me in this regard. I seem to be constantly holding the ball up waiting for a run that never happens. Bah.

Why doesn't he run into the gap? Damn it!

Mostly :this:

The last couple of versions of FIFA have given me all I want from a football game, so I'm in no mood to switch and will be happy for FIFA to just be tweaked a bit each year, since it's clearly a brilliant game as things stand so can't see why anyone would be expecting or needing a radical overhaul.

I haven't tried the FIFA 11 demo yet, but will do so, and unless something has gone drastically wrong, I don't imagine I'll even bother with the new PES demo as I just don't have the time to commit to two football games. That said, it's genuinely good to hear that PES seems loads better this year, as this was my game of choice back in the day. Can't be arsed to switch back now though.

FIFA is undeniably a great game now, but I don't think it matches what Pro Evo was before they fucked it. It's too much about gaining and losing possession in midfield. It doesn't play like a proper game of footy, which Pro Evo always did. I still think FIFA 11 is probably more competent than PES this year, but I'll be getting PES because I like the way it plays more - especially when I'm playing against my mates and not the AI. I think next year will be key, and PES will finally catch up again.

If anything, PES improving will give the FIFA devs a kick up the arse to provide more than just a few tweaks for next year. It's all good.

I played both demos last night and whilst I agree that PES is better than it has been, to me it still seems to be a mile behind Fifa.

The improvements in Fifa may not be enough to convince me to buy it this year over 2010, but even so, it felt much more solid than last year. The 360 degree and the interaction between players, which I think were selling points last year appear to work much better this year. I also found the crossing to be much more effective.

PES on the other hand still seems unfinished which translate to frustration and annoyance. The first game I played I scored because their AI keeper threw the ball to my forward who just chested it up and volleyed it into the empty net. This is either excellent and realistic AI or rubbish and stupid. I'm leaning to the latter.

Fifa also looks way better than PES. Fifa = nice and smooth, PES = horrible and jaggy

Just played more FIFA. It's a tough choice, but I think I've definitely made my mind up and I want PES. FIFA is so similar to last year's that I'm almost, almost bored of it. I can still use the same tricks as last year to score. PES felt more unpredictable and realistic - like it used to. FIFA is still a midfield to and fro before somebody breaks. PES is more open and flows better I feel. I know I'll get both because my mates all play FIFA, but, argh! PES!

I'll probably get fifa, trade in a few games and get it on the cheap. Used to be a PES fanboy but got into fifa now and can actually score goals on the game. So fifa it is.

Have now played a few games on the Fifa demo. For me the best and most hugely noticeable improvement is that it all appears a lot better on the defensive side of things - holding the defensive line, and the general tackling and so on, is tons more effective.

The 360º control thing is better for being tweaked too (as I think was pointed out above somewhere).

I also seemed better able to retain possession when being jostled, and felt more in control of the ball, like I could turn quicker and that if I needed to.

On the cosmetic side of things, I'm really liking the after match highlights area, to easily have a place to see all your goals and whatnot.

Very pleased with this overall, and deffo will be shelling out for the full game.

I still see no need to try the PES demo, but next year, who knows.

I enjoyed your article, and as a general question, I do wonder how many people buy both anyway?

I don't have so much spare time to play games these days, so I can only manage one football game, but years ago I would get both PES & FIFA as they both offered very different things.

Yeah it's a tough one. I've pre-ordered PES based on enjoying the demo and I'll pick FIFA up once it gets a bit cheaper purely for online play with my mates. I'll pile the time into PES this year I've decided.

I've playe the FIFA demo now and am quite happy with it. The crossing seems better, it is much easier to control the ball and tackling and jostling for the ball seem improved as well. Penalties are well hard now though! It also seems much smoother and the presentation of the menus is nicer. I know I'll be getting it anyway because my girlfriend pre-ordered it it a while ago (I wish she liked real football as much as she likes console football :( ) but I'm pleased with the updates!

If there were some kind of online bezzy league to entice me then I would also get fifa this year.

I have played in thedvdforums (thedigitalfix as it is now) leagues a few times and they make use of http://leaguerepublic.com/ which is really easy to use if no one wants to create a dedicated site/section here for it.

I'd offer but the only programming experience I have is copying a code out of the back of my spectrum manual for some shitty ping pong type game where "0" was the ball.

Yeah but the menus were so fucking atrocious in 09 that it was quite hard to just find the right option to click on. Has this been improved?

I do remember having some cracking games with you lot though, even if team BETEO would just get continually thrashed by Man Utd, or sometimes Barcelona.

Gave 10 a miss. Tempted by 11.

I've played the FIFA demo now and am quite happy with it. The crossing seems better, it is much easier to control the ball and tackling and jostling for the ball seem improved as well. Penalties are well hard now though!

:this:

I finished a game 0-0 the other day, so it went to pens, and four of them went miles wide or high. I thought I'd more or less got the hang of the new penalty system which they introduced in the recent World Cup game, but they do indeed seem loads more difficult here.
