Just tried downloading R-Type from Planet Emu but it won't recognise it in my MAME32 (0.103) do I need to update mame again? Or is it too new I wonder.

No idea what the current Mame32 version is, but if you want an alternate source for the ROM, it might be worth trying Emucation

There are plenty of places to try , one of the issues with the roms is not that they actually change but that the MAME devs decide they need an extra file for some small thing that they didnt need before :-)

For the actual challenge I will have links for working roms (with a specified version) and i'll upload a zip with the chosen games in

A new version of Mame sorted it. I tried my hand at R-Type, remembering I could get to level 4 on the speccy. I struggled to get into the first level, perhaps partly because this wireless keyboard is rubbish and partly because I am now old and feeble. This keyboard kept sticking in one direction which is never good.

Also any chance of adding air buster to the list of games?

I doubt I'm any better at that but it will at least bring back fond memories.

Apologies but if i do it resets the poll

Hang onto it and nominate it next time around

I can't see Air Buster being all that popular anyway. Out of the ones on offer there's only Raiden I fancy and again I doubt much further than 20 seconds into I'll have used all my lives.

OFFICIAL RESULT OF TIME I CAN LAST ON RAIDEN:

About 2 minutes. I have an unfortunate habit of following the flight path of enemy bullets when trying to evade them.

What's the thing with Darius Gaiden? It's an average game with possible the most annoying soundtrack ever.

If you think this is annoying, you just might not be that keen on the concept of sound. :p

(Ditto this.)

Do we have an established process at BEEX to burn heretics?

Darius Gaiden has one of most magnificently bonkers soundtracks ever - it works particularly well within the context of the game. (Also needs a decent set of speakers/headphones and a good chunk of bass, some surprisingly workable riffs in there.)

It's also an awesome shooter, the real challenge is to do the whole thing in one credit. (I doubt I could manage that these days, in all honesty.)

This is the real challenge of all shooters, of course. I hope we see some successful completions throughout the course of the comp! Batrider should sort the chavs from the chaps. ;)

Blimey, I think we need a few more voters. At the moment it looks like 4 games are "in", but there's a hell of a tie for 5th place!

I've still not voted so if we are still the same I can vote for the ones to make 5th and 6th place - right now we've had 12 peoples votes so if a reasonable number of them take part it should be fun.

For anyone else - if your interested vote and take part !

>bump< before the weekend - any more people want to vote ? , there are at the moment 6 games which are 'in the lead' but a vote for some of those just behind could swing it.

It's interesting to see the number of votes Radiant Silvergun is getting in. I can honestly say I've never entirely understood all the fuss that game seems to get. Certainly Ikaruga pisses all over it.

For someone like me who only plays shooters occasionally, I'd take Radiant Silvergun over Ikaruga every time. Ikaruga is too hard for its own good.

I must be playing it wrong then, because RS has always seemed far harder than Ikaruga to me.

http://www.romnation.net/srv/roms/23087 ... adius.html
http://www.gamestone.co.uk/gradius/down ... emesis.zip

Darius Gaiden
