I've written a .NET class that generates this stuff on the fly, outputs as a GIF. Really ought to push that out there a bit more.

Ancient Thread, I choose you!

IE9 Beta is out today, the reviews look pretty impressive.

They had a tech demo thing that wasn't actually a full working browser.

Firefox at home, & a mixture of IE8, Firefox & Safari at work.
New version of Chrome is supposed to be very fast.

I switched to Chrome quite a few months ago now after getting sick and tired of the Firefox memory leak using up to 2.5gig of my RAM after a few hours. Never looked back.

I love Chrome, but sadly it crasshes my PC, so have had to go back to Firefox. It is really slow. OTOH, the ad block and no script addons are much more robust.

Firefox isn't overly quick to start up, but once it's loaded I never have any speed issues with it. Only got round to trying out Firebug for it a few weeks back and I :luv: it.

Dunno. Faster than a clean install of Firefox and Chrome, which is pretty damned impressive.

Chrome was an utter dog on my work laptop at my last employer (hence I always used Firefox on that), yet runs silky smooth on my home PC. I presume it's performance is very dependent on the specification of the computer running it.

Having to run IE8 at the new workplace. Not sure we're allowed to install other apps and, having only been here 3 days, currently not confident enough to give it a try!

I switched to Chrome the first day it was released, saw the potential, and haven't looked back. It was a bit featureless back then, but it's caught up incredibly quickly without bloating up.

I found a new add-on the other week for it. It blocks popups, even the nasty on-click ones. I haven't seen a single popup since installing it. Brilliant for porn sites, that.

You can whitelist sites, and the add-on button flashes when it blocks something. It isn't perfect if the popup is really, really important, of course.

We use a crappy Public Browser system in public areas which you don't have to log into. It's based on ie6 I think, but doesn't allow pop ups of any kind. Sadly, the Outlook web interface uses a popup window to write replies to emails, rendering the public browser utterly useless for many of the foreign conference delegates that we have on campus currently.

Opera advertises itself as The Fastest Browser on Earth. I bet they'll be gutted if they ever have to stop using that.

It does amuse me to see people cooing about the latest features in other browsers though. Bookmark sync? Ha! Try EVERYTHING sync.

Adblock? Try ANY CLICKABLE CONTENT block.

And the rest.

I mean, it's by no means perfect, but fuck me, these things have been part of the standard install of Opera for ages. Never mind as bloody addons.

I didn't like Opera. It tried to be everything at once, and its rendering engine was often slightly off but plagued by its low popularity so nobody ever bothered coding for it.

It's standards compliant. You don't need to code for it. You just code for standards, rather than applying box model hacks and shit to work around IE.

Anyhoo, I'm not trying to get anyone to switch, or bow down and recognise Opera is the best. I can continue with my own sense of smug self-satisfaction.

I still haven't forgiven them for charging for it.

I use it every now and again to check websites in (as the compliance isn't perfect), and I just don't like it. I can't tell you why, and it's not bad at all - if I was stuck with it as my only browser I wouldn't mind at all, but I've always liked Chrome and Firefox more.

Only in the way Firefox and Chrome are, but much of the spec is slightly open to interpretation, and that's where it goes wrong.

I haven't tried it in a few years now, and the net seems to largely be moving towards caring about non-IE browsers now, so maybe it's a lot better. It was still a bulky client last time I checked, though.

It used to be the installer was only 3MB or so. I think since they started bundling voice control with it, it went up to 10mb.

It's probably around 14 now. Don't know how that compares...?

Unless by bulky you mean the interface, which lest we forget is nearly fully customiseable.

I stopped liking Opera when they bundled non-web clients into it and stopped fitting on a floppy*. I don't care if they were similarly teeny, they're still bigger than not forcing me to have them. Also the ads annoyed me.

Yes, I know it's not ad-supported any more (I think?) and still smaller/faster than others, but eh. Fickle.

* Or is that Eudora I'm thinking of? Possibly.

Yep, not ad supported for about 6+ years now.
Opera does have newsgroups reader, RSS reader and Mail client built in, but you don't notice them if you don't use them.

Yeah, forgot about the bittorrent client. I prefer to use the official one as it can queue stuff and prioritise, but for someone downloading one thing at a time it'll do for you.

I've said before and I'll say again that it's so feature rich now that I wouldn't recommend it to a new person, and I stopped trying to convert people to it a long time ago, but I'm pretty sure I'll never stop enthusing about it, or watching other browsers catch it up.

Used Opera from v4 to v9 and Mrs P still does use it on here (Win 7) and her Mac.

I switched to Chrome last year when I had to shift to Google Mail and not looked back.

TBH, I think the various browsers are becoming more of a commodity, you just pick the one you like and stick with it.

I use Gmail with Opera.

I think it's grand that Firefox is getting a bigger audience share all the time, just for the increased security. I put it on my Dad's PC for example.

I am pretty much browser agnostic. I've gone from Netscape Navigator 3, then switched to Internet Explorer when Communicator 4 turned out to be a bloated bag of shit, then switched away from IE to Firebird (which later became Firefox), dabbling with Opera along the way. Last year I switched to Google Chrome when Firefox turned into a bloated bag of - well, you get the idea.

Chrome is definitely the best thing out there for me at the moment, but I appreciate that devs may have different requirements. For pure and simple browsing, nothing beats it at the moment. Of course, as soon as something does, I'll more than likely jump ship again.

I'm trying it now. After a really lengthy installation, it looks a bit washed out. And, though it's tabbed, the taskbar sees each tab as its own window, which I'm not a fan of. Is there an option to import bookmarks? It's not suggested I can do so, unlike the other (admittedly non-beta) browsers I have. It doesn't seem faster than Chrome on this Windows 7 Acer Aspire Revo. It's not sluggish, but it did just have issues closing a Sky Sports News tab. Maybe that's Sky's bad.

Ha. On my parents' computer there's a few shortcuts on the desktop. I've hidden IE everywhere I can and renamed the Chrome shortcut to "THE INTERNET".
