Pretty G, really. Can be used as a squad support weapon (on barrel mounted bipod or tripod mount), a vehicle mounted weapon or a helicopter door mounted weapon.

Both of those roles revolve around ejecting fast moving pieces of metal in a fixed direction. Compared to, say a Swiss Army knife or a computer or a car or even a Bowie knife or those assault shovel things, that's not particularly general.

"No, fuckers too far away!"
"Right, we'll use the turret, then"

It is general for a machine gun, I think. I think the designation is due to the fact that there were a number of different classifications of machine gun back in WW1-WW2 period, effectively from light up to heavy, each having a specific purpose.

EDIt - Mali, you have possibly misunderstood, presumably deliberately for comic purposes.

Fume extractor - LOL. Yeah, occupational health and safety being paramount on a machine gun

You say that, but I was wandering past a Royal Navy patrol boat moored up in Bristol harbour the other month and it had warning stickers on all the guns saying "DANGEROUS! DO NOT STAND THIS SIDE WHILE IN OPERATION"

Possibly less "occupational health and safety", more "when shooting from inside a tin can, it's a good idea not to gas yourself and all your mates".

Do you pay VAT on rail tickets (specifically season tickets)?

No.

Quote:
But what about claiming VAT back on train, air and bus tickets? A lot of businesses do this automatically and never think about it until they get a visit from a VAT Officer. The problem is that passenger transport in a vehicle, ship or aircraft designed or adapted to carry not less than 10 people (including the driver) is zero-rated. That means there is no VAT to be claimed and if a VAT Officer finds that you have been claiming VAT back he will disallow it and charge you interest.

You just need a train that carries less than ten people. For a man who used to commute by boat, I'd have assumed that was easily achievable.

If I took a £340 pay cut and coincidently work started paying for my monthly ticket, that'd save me 40% due to income tax, right?

Could getting a ticket from work be classed as a taxable benefit?

I think that would be a benefit in kind, and taxable. I'm sure Riles will know.

Right -

Register the Tomcat as a private hire taxi.

Drive Tomcat to work.

Claim expenses.

Take monthly pay deduction equal to expenses minus whatever the tax would be.

Well, today was a wash out. Rained so heavily the generator shorted. Don't make em like they used to. Was pretty grateful as I was bored and wet by then anyway.

In other news, don't use the Scandic hotels; they are shit.

In other improbable news, I was coming back from town and it began to rain a fair bit. Seeking shelter in a nearby pub, I bought a pint and used their toilets. I then saw the advert saying if I bought a Jack Daniels I could win something or other. I read the T&C's at the bottom, and it said "No purchase necessary". So, on leaving I asked for a card, the barman said I needed to buy one, i showed him the T&C's and he gave me a scratchcard. I now have a Jack Daniels rafia cowboy hat, and very rakish it is, too.

The law.

If there is any chance involved in who wins the prize, it will be deemed to be an illegal lottery if you're required to pay to enter. Only certain sorts of lottery are permitted under the Gambling Act (the National Lottery, certain sorts of charity lottery)

Chris is 99% correct.
It's not an illegal lottery, it's just a lottery, something you need a licence for.

And now he's edited his post.
