OK. We'll have another poll.

"Are you a taxpayer or a government?"
1) Taxpayer
2) Government
3) JAM JAM JAM JAM JAM

Also, you actually think that 98% of respondants are actually confused and don't see a difference between 'taxpayer' and 'government'? 98%?

See, if it was 30% or something, I'd possibly believe you. But 98% of people DON'T UNDERSTAND THE QUESTION? Really? No. It's not like that question is anything other than fucking obvious.

And of course your way is clearer. I believe in legal terms it's referred to as 'leading the witness'. You put 'personally' in italics, for goodness sake.

No, it isn't obvious, especially to idiots.

My way isn't "leading" anything, its a clear, unambiguous question, seeing as my original bet was that people don't really think they are PERSONALLY owed money.

98% of a randomly selected responding population are idiots? But they are still capable of fully understanding the mechanics of taxation and the bailout?

Well you're saying there's absolutely no way that any single person misunderstands the situation enough to think that they are actually owed any money. But 98% fail to understand basic english enough to answer an extremely simply worded question in a way that states that they do think they are owed money.

What also seems funny at the time is saying to a work colleague, on an office night out, that "I for one have never thought of fisting you" loudly in a pub that had suddenly gone quiet.

Well exactly. I don't think anyone in the country genuinely thinks that when the government is owed money they are personally owed a share of it, otherwise they would be applying for 100% tax rebates on their own tax bill. "Owes the taxpayer" is a stupid phrase the media uses, which YOU YOURSELF WENT ON ABOUT.

Try calling her Chumbawamba. Wait for the eyes of rage, then follow with ‘It's either that or Tubthumber.’

She won't know what to do, leaving you with plenty of time to escape or divert her attention elsewhere.

Just got off the phone with O2 again after my broadband has been melting over the past week. The router frequently loses the DSL connection, but when it's connected it flicks between zippy-as-hell and slow-as-a-crawl intermittently.

They've taken a few steps on their end, pushing the line as far as they can, sending me a new microfilter, and have now posted a new router to me. The problem still persists, and they tech guy doesn't have any hope about the new router sorting the problem. So it looks like I'll need an engineer to come out.

Sob :'(

Image

edit: it's now in its zippy-as-hell stage. Countdown to the disconnect: 3...2...1

edit edit: even when it's zippy enough, the upload speed is utterly, utterly broken. The support guy was appalled at the rates I was getting.

LEGAL TYPES!

Tired of not being asked questions about employment law? Read on!

A person at a workplace (not mine) is being treated abominably, and very definitely unlawfully, by her employers. Most of the staff are in fact, but that's another issue. This person is clearly being lined up for constructive dismissal, and as part of that, the employer has asked someone to go into the employee's email account and delete certain incriminating messages.

While I am certain that the inevitable tribunal would look upon this very dimly indeed, I don't know where the law stands on it. Does an employer have the right to get into an employee's account and alter its contents?

Also my proposed solution was simply to set up a forwarding address to a hotmail account, so that a simple glance would show immediately what had been deleted, but that's another issue again.

Mr the agent,

I'm fairly sure employers are allowed to mess with your work emails, although I faintly recall that there may be data protection issues if the IT policy doesn't say they may monitor/mess with emails. But data protection laws are worth shit.

The tribunal will tear them to fuck, though - she MUST forward everything to hotmail.

While I'm not a legal type person, I know a lot about regulations around email.

So. They own all email data. It is my understanding that they do have the right to delete things unless:

1) the emails are evidence of an offence, legal or civil.
2) the industry she works in has a regulatory requirement to retain archives of electronic communication.

It's also an important point that she should very carefully check her terms of use of email and other electronic systems. Autoforwarding email to a personal address may in itself be forbidden, and by doing that she may provide them with the very cause for dismissal that they are after.
