Hello folks,

My girlfriend's favourite film in the entire world ever is Jurassic Park. However, as she was only a youngster when it came out (she's a year younger than me, cash back), she never got the chance to see it at a cinema, and she always moans about this. What would you say are my chances of arranging some sort of Jurassic Park cinema viewing (at a proper cinema) for me and her? Slim? None? I mean, I imagine hiring out a cinema for a couple of hours is possible, but probably expensive, but I seriously doubt they'd just have the Jurassic Park reels lying about.

The other (more boring and realistic) option is a cinema somewhere re-showing Jurassic Park, which happens periodically for a lot of movies I've noticed. How can I find out about this happening? I'd obviously be willing to travel considering the specificity of the event.

And secondly, what awesomely elaborate gifts have you had given to you/given to another?

Possibly not as expensive as you'd imagine. During a weekday no-one goes. And they do hire them out for kids parties.

When the perfect ten podcast does live gigs they do them in cinemas to about 80 people for £10 a ticket for a whole Friday night. Sourcing a print may be the trickiest issue.

Yeah I imagined it'd be pretty easy to hire it out - like you say though, it's the film itself that's gonna be tough.

Looking at this site, it has -

Quote:
LARGE SCREEN
285 Seats, high back dark red leather chairs, red drapes and curtains, large staging area with the capability to screen 35mm and video from Digi Beta, Beta SP, DVD and PC. Sound by Dolby Digital. Full PA facilities available for stage and audience.

SMALL SCREEN
104 Seats, high back purple leather recliner chairs, crushed velvet drapes, Funky multi colour Led wall/screen lighting, Starlight ceiling. Projection from 35mm, and video from Digi Beta, Beta SP, DVD and PC. Sound by Dolby Digital. Full PA facilities available for stage and audience.

So you could just go for the DVD? Maybe even a custom version with some of your own trailers at the start?

Oooh! I think they've used the Small Auditorium from there on the Culture Show before. I'll look into it - cheers! Not sure how the DVD would look, though, but it's the best bet so far. I wish they'd release the chuffing Blu Ray already.

edit: That cinema is fucking expensive to hire. Looking at a grand for the pleasure. Eep! I'm sure Showcase Teesside wouldn't cost that much :P

I've emailed our local Cineworld which offers "private screenings of the latest blockbusters or cult classics", so, you never know...

That's a really cool gift idea. Hope you find somewhere that will do that for you.

I haven't seen any of the Jurassic Park movies. Ever. You may now commence mocking . . . !

I listen to the radio 4 film podcast and it appears that there are a multitude of small independently run cinemas all over the country that are run by enthusiasts, many of which are digital capable.

You're going to have to do some donkey work here. If you're lucky you may find somewhere who'll go "Sure, we can do that, £300 and we'll source the movie as well"

What I suspect is that you may find somewhere prepared to screen it for not much money but you'll have to source the movie yourself.

I'd be ringing the BFI on Monday and talking to someone there.

This is doable, you just need to get off your arse and do it yourself.

Fishing for invites, eh? Well, we have the back row, so you can take your pick of the rest of the seats. (Not the ones directly in front of us, though.)

To get the full cinema experience you'll have to hire extras who will rustle sweet wrappers, talk, answer their mobile phone or sit there tapping away at the fucking thing with an illuminated screen, people to sit in front of you, someone to sit at the side of you hogging the armrest, a small child to sit behind you kicking the back of your chair, an underage child who'll scream and tantrum through most of it, and finally people who wander in well after the film's started and prowl the stairs looking for somewhere to sit for ten fucking minutes. I love cinemas.

If newcastle isn't too far a trek there's a small club/cinema called the star and shadow that might play it. One of my bands are putting on a gig/movie night for Halloween with evil dead 2 oMln after the bands. But they might have it on at some point or for cheap.

If you've got a Picturehouse cinema near you, I think you can normally hire those out for screenings. Dunno how much they'd charge though.

You could use my theatre.

Not joking. If Liverpool isn't too far, I can find out how much staff rates are. We have a huge screen and I'm sure a hd copy can got.

Oh yes

Are the staff costs, perchance, coincidentally in the region of the price of a new boiler?

Ok, I've run some calculations. Assuming we just use the house lights it'd cost in the region of £30-£40 for an 8 hour day.

So, yeah. Cheaps.
