I was going to get the scores from Metacritic to disprove that but, for reasons that cannot be explained, they've changed it from a nice, organised, easily-searchable resource to THE WORST SITE THAT HAS EVER BEEN.

Dimzlez, I noted that silliness in a recent that I wrote* but it doesn't change the fact that weak buildings + giant ants + infinite ammo + epic draw distance = fun in your pants.

Between this news and the loveliness of Case Zero, I'm officially into games again.

EDF was all right. I have not finished it, and I doubt I will.

It'd be great if there was online co-op. I enjoyed EDF quite a lot, it was silly fun with explosions and big aliens.

The vehicles were really shit though.

Oh I finished co-op on easy and then next level. I was however playing with myoptikakaka on his account! No Achievo's for the little helper.

The great thing about EDF is that despite not having a Horde-mode, it out-horded all the games that do have a horde mode. Many of the levels were how I imagine the LV-426 last stand to have been. But with fuck off ants. In a horde.

I played it up level 8 or so, and got bored with it.

I'd forgotten it even had vehicles in it. If they made them useful in the sequel, that would be a good improvement. I couldn't control that bloody helicopter at all.

See, that's exactly how it was like for me the first time I played it. Then I went back a couple of months later and ended up playing the whole thing through twice (easy and normal), and then half-way through again on hard before it finally got too much for me.

That sounds about where I go to on it. I might get a bit further in two-player but it's brutally difficult in single-player. God knows how Bluce maxed the damn thing out.

Farming weapons on level 40 (I think. It's the red ant canyon level) on Inferno helps. It can nab you the best turrets and some high level sniper rifles and rocket launchers. Makes Hard difficulty fairly tolerable.

Also, grinding health for a bit is essential.

There are a few levels that can properly fuck off (the walking fortress one for a start). For those I gave Mrs Blucey a pad, equipped turrets and had her run around like a mad thing.

It wasn't an elegant max though. Took two years and involved me quitting a lot!

All I remember clearly from EDF was the ants that suddenly became about five grams in weight once dead, and rocketed backward as if hit with a giant cricket bat if you shot them, and yet managed to happily march forward without impediment whilst alive.

That's a strong word. It's also completely wrong. I mean at worst you could moan about the lack of variety, the sketchy framerate and the daft plot. The vehicles as well but they are easily ignored.

Do those faults add up to awful? Nah. You have to look at what it got right. If you want big, stupid, shooty action in bitesize chunks, it delivered. Where other third person shooters bore my tits off (things like Gears) this was just fun.

Add to that tonnes of destruction, huge swarms and gigantic beasts and you've got a recipe for budgety b-movie gaming.

It was pick up and play goodness of the sort last seen on the Dreamcast.

Admittedly the achievements are a bit (read: lot) chore but it's a shoot 'em up, not an achieve 'em up. So best to judge it on the action.

I have now played this and have it and have played it.

Keeping the little guys alive seems to be an awful lot of work considering how they can be instantly splatted, if not by ants then by blundering cluelessly into your line of fire.

Fun, though. I love the little things they shout. I'm not sure whether "SHOOT THE ENEMY!" is my favourite, or "DON'T BE KILLED!"
