So yesterday I hung with an old friend and we fired up Marvel VS Capcom 2 that I bought on sale on XBLA. We have a long history going back to childhood of playing fighters. Not high level play, but not button mashing are way through games and having a laugh.

But we only played about 4 games. Why? Because, on his prompting we downloaded Deadlist Warriors.

It should be awful.

It's not even a movie tie in, but a shit tv show tie in which each weeks pitches two historical figures against each other; Viking versus Spartan and so on to find out which is "deadlist" via the use of a 'computer' and a reinactment. It's main claim to fame is being lambasted in You Have Been Watching where Brooker showed clips of their IRA versus Taliban episode.

It's absolutley panned on metacritic getting 57%.

Still I was curious when Eurogamergave it 4/10.

But we played it for hours.

The clue why is in Eurogamer's massively wrong headed review states:

Quote:
Having evidently ignored all of the best bits of Street Fighter, Tekken, Virtua Fighter and even Mortal Kombat, we're instead treated to a fighting game entirely devoid of combos. It's like the last 22 years of fighting game evolution never happened, with a hilariously limited range of moves.

The reason it seems like that is because it's the spirtiual sequel to Bushido Blade!
  • You can die in one hit.
  • You can run about a huge areana.
  • Rounds can be over with a single move; like spear-through-head.
  • Rounds last about 8 seconds.
  • Except when your opponent throws a spear through your face
  • You don't auto face each other, so if you put your back to your oppoent then you die.
  • You can disable arms, and legs so they can't be used. Or chop them off.
  • You have a short range weapon (sword, knife etc) a mid range weapon (axe, spear etc) and a thrown weapon (shuriken, dart, bow) and can swap between them.
  • Each character doesn't have many moves as it is about when you use them and preserving your stamina. Not how well you can imput them.

I mean, it's cheap, basic, the AI is bit shit, the single player modes are pants and apparently people act like cunts on line. But it's the closest game I've seen to Bushido Blade's multiplayer in a long, long time.

And thats a Very Good Thing.

I dl'd the demo but never fired it up. One of my Peowwchildren says it's decent though. Consider my interest re-ignited. I'll fire it up tonight for one hit stabby action.

I mean, I might never play it again but a night of sitting round the TV grinning like loons as though we are kids again for 800MS points (or 400 each in our case) was pretty much worth it.

And it's very, very much a multiplayer in real life game only.

:luv: Bushido Blade.

Fond memories of running through the snow chopping down bamboo canes.

To the download box machine (when I get home)!

Damn.. it's a shame the single player isn't up to much or I'd be all over this. I used to attempt the 'kill 100 opponents' mode of Bushido Blade and be doing really well, before doing a jonarob losing the function of a limb, at which point it got a bit tricky. When you're crawling along the floor, it's a little hard to swordfight.

Anbody watch Deadliest Warrior on Monday? It was the best I've ever seen. It was the Vietcong taking on the SS, described as a battle between the two most evil forces of the twentieth century (the program is sooooo American). The fellows representing the Vietcong were yer typical sensible Vietnamese chaps whereas the SS representatives were blatantly Nazis, even down to silly German accents and slicked side-partings.

Vietcong had some awesome weapons - their grenade turned a pig carcass into atoms and they had a spike pit poisoned with human poo (apparently a very effective poison). SS flamethrower wiped the floor with them though. I tipped Vietcong,
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
but they lost and I am now 2 - 3 for the series. Dammit.

It's an extravagant typo, almost like he aimed for the wrong word.

I love the way that, after shooting bombs at a dummy, they walk up to the decapitated mannequin and the Doctor bloke says "I work in Emergency Trauma Medicine, and that's a kill shot".

Yep! It certainly was quite mad. Especially the German guy who was loving up his nazi heritage. Loved the episode though.

Bit of a shame that it came down to flamethrower vs poo sticks really. I'm not too convinced by this simulator thing they've got, especially if all it does is simulate battles based on what that shouty guy thinks is the marginally better weapon.

I reckon the VC would win on account of them less likely to quit, which is something I don't think they really factor in.

Apparently the final episode of this series shall answer the question "Who is Deadliest? Sun Tzu or Vlad the Impaler?" :D
