I tried installing linux to my ipod last night

Sharepod can find all the music on it though. So that's something.

The charging logo looks different too. If I don't have it connected to the computer and switch it on it tries to boot a couple of times then says connect to itunes to restore or something.

Am I likely to lose data stored on the ipod if I don't back it up first? Is the ipod just permanently screwed now?

The answer is that I will need to backup everything I have on my ipod right now in order to restore it.

I figured my ipod acts as disc drive so I might be able to run linux on my laptop from it. But I couldn't. Nothing lost though as I had backups. I just didn't want to have to spend hours doing that if it wasn't necessary.

You realise that Linux compiled for an iPod, a tiny embedded ARM processor with hardly any memory, is going to be somewhat different to a standard distribution for an x86 PC, right?

I think he want to use his MP3 player as portable HDD which when plugged into the USB slot of a PC will boot up the Linux Distro installed on said HDD. so he want a full PC Distro, not an MP3 player controlling Linux.

Yes, exactly that - though it was rather confusing to read.

I would suggest experimenting with a £5 usb stick would have been a better choice - especially as you'd need to stick an MBR on it, which would fuck the iPod.

Yes, you can with a USB flash drive. By copying the distribution onto the drive, and then making it bootable.

I'm not sure if you can do that with an iPod, but it's pretty clear that installing uLinux as the OS for the iPod isn't going to help
