Minecraft is tremendous. Tremendously tremendous.

It’s basically Dwarf Fortress + Lego played from a FPS perspective in a pixelly 3D world. You exist in a procedurally generated world (that in principle can be generated to sizes beyond that of earth) and cut down trees, dig in the earth and begin to build shelter before it gets dark and the monsters come out. In many ways it’s close to the best distillation of a Zombie game ever made, Building your own little fortress to survive scary nature.

The guy quit his job to work on it and it’s in alpha at the moment with new stuff added almost every week. It’s only €10 before it updates to beta and as of writing he has sold 48450 copies. Though a good 10K of those have been in the last week or so, and he’s been working on it for a year.

It’s written in java and can be played in browser, or via a downloadable stand alone version (which is far more stable on the mac at least).

The Beex Minecraft server is no more wrote:
Sorry guys, but it was costing me £35/mnth to run and no-one was ever on it. So it's down, probably forever.

You can still download backups of the world files and load them up into your local Minecraft. I have two available, one from the day after Owen's passing and one final backup from the day I took the server offline. I have more backups, if anyone finds anything wrong with those, but I think this is enough.

If anyone wants to take over the hosting, I can help sort you out with the files you need.

I also have the map files still on my local drive. It's tricky to host and move around though, as it's over 2GB of tiny, tiny image files. If anyone wants to put these back online, again, let me know.

Cheers guys. It was fun while it lasted!

If you find you are disconnected a few seconds after joining, post in this thread and ask a mod to whitelist you with the /playerwhitelist add <your_player_name> command. This is to stop non-beexers who find this thread through Google messing with our stuff.)

The friendliest way to explore is to follow Craster's Grey Brick road -- turn to the right from the spawn area and you can't miss it. It'll take you past most of the more significant areas. If Dave is online, ask for a tour of the DaveNet subway system; this is the ornate entrance immediately ahead as you spawn. It links more areas than Craster's road but is easier to get lost in.

Notes on the multiplayer:
  • It's very, very rough. It might crash. We might lose our world. Etc etc.
  • Be excellent to each other. Don't mess up people's shit. Don't steal stuff from chests. Public chests are free-for-all and should be clearly signed. If in doubt, don't take stuff.
  • Be wary of starting fires; if lots of fires start burning lots of stuff it can make the server slowdown to needing a restart, apparently.
  • Minecarts don't work.

Summon mode wrote:
Trusted players can do the following commands now, as well as some others listed here. You might not be trusted -- I need to add you individually, so just ask. Open the chat console with t, then enter:
  • /kit <kit_name> -- summon a group of items at once. I can set the groups. Kits are shown at http://minecraft.eggwan.com/kits.txt (you just want the first part, before the colon)
  • /playerlist-- list who is online
  • /sethome, /home -- sets any point you want as your main home point, then takes you there. May not be persisted if you log off or if the server restarts.
  • /warp <warpname> -- take you to a server-defined landmark. List is here: http://minecraft.eggwan.com/warps.txt (you just want the first part, before the colon)

Still as soon as it gets dark, scary things will come out. So first. Need wood. Lets punch the fuck out of a tree.

Going to film (yes film!) a tour of my place as it stands now. As it rocks.

It's important to point out that multiplayer survival is being hacked into the game as we speak (a rough version has just been released). This means we could have a Beex server where we build Beex Towers and fill it full of awesome castles and such like. It would be perfect for multiplayer as we don't even have to be on at the same time.

In principle a one of the players can be the server, but with a server we would have a continous world to build up. :D

(I lost my hosting recently though. Bah!)

We've a few weeks at least till the multiplayers complete enough to be super-awesome, but then I believe he's putting the price up.

Worst case is that we find a public server and carve out a beex space.

EDIT: Way to go dimmers.

About an hour according to youtube before the quick 2min tour of Lave Towers uploads. It was 3 or 4 hours of playing. Though quite some of that was spent exploring.

Yes. It's not really a zombie game, but yet it somehow has the spirit of one that 'proper' games don't have. A world with you given freedom to live in however you like.

And building awesome stuff.

In other news Safari crashed* at 90% uploaded. So no video at mo. I'll make a better one and upload later.

Sod that. It's Miner Dig Deep, but all 3D and proper fun. If you now can add multiplayer to that it's awesome.

I can never find iron in my current mine. To the extent that I'm thinking of moving. Did just find some gold ore (I think) though.

I shall crown my castle with a gold spire.

Pro-tip: Wherever you set up shop, put a little tower with torches all over it on the nearest hill. Makes finding your way back if it gets dark, so much easier.

As anyone found any seeds yet? The hoe seems completely useless at the moment.

Do you know when your playing a game and can't string a coherent sentence together? I'm trying to upload a video of that!

Haven't found seeds or nothing. Or made a hoe. Your skills have surpassed mine in what? 3 hrs? You're slowing Dimrill!

Played the free version a bit. Didn't understand how actually awesome it was at the start. "Gagh! Look at that. I can't get to my stupid tower because of a big canyon, and I can't add to the battlements because I fall off. Boo! What's Lave talking about? The man's a car-tilting idiot!" >:|

Moments later...

"Oh, hold on. I can build a bridge to the door. Might as well add some Gothic flourishes. And I guess I can build a balcony to get at that roof too. Now for an extra staircase and an outer wall to protect against HOLY SHIT THIS IS FUCKING AWESOME!" :DD

Aha! Obsidian! Now to find some diamond to make a strong enough pickaxe...

Nobody knows it, but I've got a secret entrance. And I use it only for mushrooms.
