For a bit of a laugh I thought I'd have a go at working out such a thing. They aren't necessarily my absolute top 10 films as I sometimes forget which I like best so it's the first 10 that come to mind. (With my odd taste, I expect it to be quite low)

1 Blade Runner 8.3
2 Aliens 8.5
3 Alien 8.5
4 Deathstalker 2 4.7
5. Breaking Glass 6.3
6. A Life Less Ordinary 6.3
7. The Crow 7.6
8. Dark Star 6.6
9. Three Colours Blue 7.9
10. Liquid Sky 5.7

=70.4

An excellent idea sir. My deeply personal top ten of today in no particular order...

The Man With The Golden Gun 6.7
The Usual Suspects 8.7
Trainspotting 8.2
Airplane! 7.8
Anchorman 7.0
The Lives of Others 8.5
Raiders of the Lost Ark 8.7
Shawshank 9.2
Commando 6.3
Vertigo 8.6

which totals 79.7. Not bad.

I cannot genuinely say this is off the top of my head - this list has been profiled to make me look more like a cineaste :p But they're all films I love and have seen at least 3 times for most of them and many times more for at least half of them. What they all have in common is that they get better with repeated viewings. It goes without saying that there are many films mentioned in this thread that I have seen and think are awesome and some that have received high scores which I haven't seen. These have been noted. One thing I have to say is that the entire metric is pissed by the simple fact that The Shawshank Redemption gets 9.2. It's very good, but it's not more than an 8 ferchissakes.

The Manchurian Candidate (1963 version with Laurence Harvey and Frank Sinatra) 8.3
Blade Runner 8.3
Unforgiven 8.3
A Clockwork Orange 8.5
The Thing 8.2
One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest 8.9
L A Confidential 8.4
Chinatown 8.5
North by Northwest 8.6
Casablanca 8.8

84.8/100

2: Fargo - 8.3
3: Night of the Hunter - 8.2
4: O Brother Where Art Thou - 7.8
5: The Life & Death of Colonel Blimp - 8.1
6: North by North West - 8.6
7: Porco Rosso - 7.8
8: Master & Commander - 7.5
9: Tremors - 7.2
10: It's a Wonderful Life - 8.7

Average: 8.02/10 / 80.2/100

But only 8.2 for Night of the Hunter, arguably the greatest film ever made? Are they mad? And Crowe haters knocking the glorious Master & Commander down too? (It's Peter Weir for Christ sakes! Maybe I should have gone for also fave 'Witness' at 7.6 instead?) Looks like it's Tremors that's knocked it down for me, but I'm unrepentant. I'm sure it's the lousy endless sequels and series spin-offs that's responsible for its IMDB under-rating.

Top ten from ones others have chosen that I also love:

North by Northwest
Labyrinth
The Lives of Others
Groundhog Day
Robocop
My Neighbour Totoro
Seven Samurai
Big Lebowski
Bladerunner
Life Aquatic (Ta for choosing this Mimi, it doesn't get enough love!)

Was Never Ending Story II the one with the witch with the blank face in it? I remember her - possibly mixed with a memory of the witch from that ridiculous/awesome/awful 'MAGIC SHOES?' Clark's advert my sister was obsessed with at the time, a travelling teapot and a stupid big chicken. I have no idea if it was any good. I did like the first one when I was a kid though.

Look, I know what with Two Worlds and everything that I'm really in no position to criticise, but that right there is the belmingest thing ever said on BeeX.

Some great suggestions here. Nice idea picking a top ten from others choices, Pete.

Not surprised that one of my choices has the lowest score so far. :metul:

I wrote this with just the top ten out of my head and then read some others and thought - i have to have the princess bride in there but i'm not sure what one i'd drop , the other two that jumped into my head while writing but i left out were "Big Trouble in little china" , a great silly film but it was as i added in the thing and escape from new york which are much better Kurt Russell movies , and Akira which was just such an impressive film to me when i first saw it.

I also kept putting breaking glass in the list and then taking it back out , its probably because its on Nirejhenge's list which reminded me about it - anyway - how are you suppose to stop at 10 ? :-)

Also: Good to see this is a Star Wars free list so far.

Both John Coffey and Blucey FAIL at this because they haven't added up their score.

These are probably not the best films I have seen but ones which I can (and have) watch multiple times. There's loads of films that I have seen that have had a really big effect on me but watching them again wouldn't have the same effect so these are my favourites - not necessarily the best.

Good Fellas 8.7
Galaxy Quest 7.2
Toy Story 2 8.0
Princess Bride 8.1
Dogma 7.3
High Plains Drifter 7.6
Starship Troopers 7.1
Monty Python and The Holy Grail 8.4
Bourne Identity 7.7
The Prophecy 6.4

Total - 76.5

Goodfellas 8.8

Highlander 7.2
Empire Strikes Back 8.8
Constantine 6.7
The Matrix 8.7
The Telephone 3.7
The Boondock Saints 7.8
Return of the Jedi 8.3
Bruce Almighty 6.6

74.4

A mixture of films that I have watched lots of times and one or two that I only saw once but stood out from the crowd. Obviously the people who have rated the telephone don't appreciate it as much as I do probably because it is mainly Whoopi on the telephone and nobody gets shot or shagged.

Jesus, I've missed out The Good, The Bad and the Ugly!

10 is such a low number.

I really should have had Napoleon Dynamite in my list. After all, I did take a long trip to the town where it was filmed to go see all the sites and sights.

I bet Steve Brookstein would have fucked it up also!

My bad, I rushed the list as I had to get off to work. I'm here now, adding up film scores. Fuck you NHS!

Hmm.... hmm... that might work, depends which fruit though would have to be cranberry or black cherry maybe. It would also need a good strong cheese.

It warms my heart that Nirejhenge loves Liquid Sky, Zordoz loves Freddie Got Fingered and Mimi loves... well, all the awesome 80s kids fantasy films I would expert her to love. Everything is right in the world!

My (non definitive) list would be:

The Terminator - 8.1/10
The Thing - 8.2/10
Blade Runner FC - 8.3/10
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - 7.6/10
Pi - 7.5/10
Tetsuo, The Iron Man - 7.0/10
2001: A Space Odyssey - 8.4/10
Apocalypse Now - 8.6/10
Naked - 7.9/10
Rockers - 7.6/10

Total = 79.2

That makes it 0.1 point better than Edison's 1894 classic 'Fred Ott's Sneeze' (6.3)

Ten? TEN? TEN!?

You people have no soul. How can you narrow your choices down to 10?

Anyway, here are my current (as I thought of them, top ten ;) )

In no particular order

Code:
Die Hard                  8.3
Aliens                    8.5
Wall-E                    8.5
Silence of the Lambs      8.7
Shawshank (MaliA smells)  9.2
Full Metal Jacket         8.4
Fight Club                8.8
Shaun of the Dead         8.0
Ghostbusters              7.8
Back To the Future 2      7.5

Total                     83.7

Ack. What a hideously populist list.
