Vice City was awesome sauce, yes, but San Andreas was my favourite by miles. I seem to be alone in the appraisal, mind.

Vice City was easily the worst of the 3D GTAs. The city was incredibly fucking boring, the missions were far too hard and the eighties setting was rubbish.

Nope, not alone. San Andreas was awesome - the excellence of Vice City with some welcome refinements (no more instant death when you fall in the water!) It was also hilariously funny in (quite a lot of) places.

Well your 40s thing will come with LA Noire which sounds bum drippingly good so far.

Oh, yes, it was brilliant, but it was less brilliant that GTA3 and San Andreas.

I'd go for III > Vice City > San Andreas > IV. You'd think, as I've enjoyed each one progressively less than the previous one, I'd have stopped bloody buying them by now. I blame those who raved over IV on here.

For me, it's IV > San Andreas > 3 > Vice City. I love GTA IV so hard.

I'm not sure I'd entirely agree with saying GTA3 was better than Vice City, though I had tonnes more fun on that one once I'd mastered flying the Dodo.

San Andreas though was fantastic. I liked that you could completely customise your character, right down to how fit or fat he looked. I liked the fact the game map was a massive area with 3 whole cities with countryside and desert in between, mixing it all up. I loved all the silly little things you could do, like base jumping and bailing out of aeroplanes. GTA:SA is as good as the series ever got and IV was a massive step backwards in many respects.

I'd go:

San Andreas > Vice City > IV > III.

And then: original GTA > London 1969 > GTA2. GTA2 was utter gash.

Yeah, they added all that fun stuff and side things and fun then stripped it all out for their grimy fucking Shenmue homage IV.

Ahh, but they added annoyingly naggy friends, so all's good.

*sighs* Hollywood? Unless it's something new, no. I think I'm out. You can only drive over/trample so many prostitutes in between doing questionable jobs for shady people before it starts to get old.

You said it. Vice City was flat and boring but San Andreas was a cracking place to visit. The countryside should have been a boring expanse but it was a place to take your toys out to play. Plus, I freaking love the hip hop soundtrack.

My complaint would be that Rockstar hasn't moved on with its storytelling. Red Dead showed moments where they looked like they would take beyond simple fetch quests, but there are far too many, and no matter how much fun the environment is, there's gotta be something compelling to inspire you to continuing playing.

Things that Vice City had that made it bestest:

1) Masssive fun 80s soundtrack that was BOSTIN on each and every station.
2) Ripped off Scarface.
3) Miami sunsets over the beach.
4) um...

Excellent motorcycle fun.

Africa by Toto on the soundtrack alone made it the best GTA. Although Goodbye horses did slightly redeem IV. Ahhhh, 80's cheese.

Yes... when I read this thread title I thought "didn't they already have 'Vinewood' in Los Santos in San Andreas?" (that sentence sounds awful, but it IS technically correct).

If I made a GTA:Hollywood game, it would have an awesome mega twist at the end that is so genius you'd barf in your socks and drink it back down again. You'd do all your shooting and killing and stealing and wotnot, and then at the end it would be revealed... duh duh DUH!... that it was all just stunts; your bad-ass gangster was just an actor and you were making a film the whole time. Teh aw3s0m3z, n0?

Vice City was the one I played most, but it is true that the city was very flat and uninteresting. The level design of 3 was terrific (how many hours I spent powering around those tunnels and flipping cars down those hills I've no idea), but I found myself stuck on clunky, shitty missions too often, and the driving was too clunky.

SA was terrific, but I just lost interest before I'd unlocked half of it. I think the fact that I even had to work ino rder to play it was half the problem. Also CJ (right?) was the most hateful moron of a protagonist ever, and I never really forgave the game for giving me the option to have those tremendously fun gang wars, eventually take over the city, and then tear the whole thing away from me in a cut scene and force me to be an errand boy for someone I could just as easily kill.

GTA4, meanwhile, was so good at simulating a city that I soon switched it off and played a game instead.

Anyway. They've done GTA to death. They need to leave it alone, at least for a few years, or radically change the set-up. A palette swap won't do. Setting it in Rome or Beijing or Atlantis or something might help, but probably not much.

Vice City had the best city size in my view, whereas in San Andreas, once you had the whole map unlocked, you could have missions that could take 20 minutes just to drive to the start point.

Also, was Vice City the last version with Rampages?

Vice City had the best characters, atmosphere, setting and the worst city.

SA had the best city(ies) but lost the excellent setting and had hateful characters.

The problem is that SA had the fun stuff but it was better than the actual game which I gave up on pretty early. The new one may be "Advanced Real Life Simulator" but at least I don't feel distracted enough to keep on going off and doing other stuff.

The first 3D was best, Vice City was a glossy 80's finish over a flawed game.
