Moved house, cables mixed up, got about fifty kettle leads here and not sure whether a 13 amp or a 5 amp is correct for my pc. It's a regular modern gaming pc.

Any clues?

Watts = Volts * Amps

240V * 5 amp = 1,200 Watts max.

If you have a bigger PSU than that on your gaming PC, you are JC & I claim my £5!

That is indeed wht he is saying.

Anyway, if you have as many as you say you do then you can easily spare a 5A ;)

Yup - 5A should be fine, and in theory is 'safer' as it will blow earlier if there is a problem.
But in practice, use any old one, as you should only be using 500W tops.
(and strictly speaking, UK is 210V RMS, so the max safe wattage for 5A is 1050 Watts. Any more and you *risk* the fuse blowing from normal operation, which is not what you want)

I'll stick with this 5A then, cheers all. God, my brain is fried with this move.

The kettle leads I pulled out of the "IT drawer" were all 13.

Rule of thumb when it comes to fuses: use 13 amps if it's purpose is to generate heat (ie a kettle) otherwise use 5 amps. Simple.

They should reissue the chocolate bars too.

Yup - just looked it up.. the RMS is 230-240V for UK domestic (actual peak can be up to 300V in some cases), but the national grid spec says your RMS is anywhere between 220V and 250V and still be 'in the normal range', which gives you a max safe wattage of around 1.1 kW for a 5A fuse (if you are in rural areas)
, and if you are right next to a distribution point, you may be getting 250V (1.25kW).

IN practice, the fuses have around 1A leeway anyway, so 1.2kW should be OK on a 5A (but only just), 13A takes up to 3kW safely.

That's better.
Vpp is well over 300 normally. I measured 320 on the input capacitors of the charger I was fixing yesterday.

By the way, fuses hardly ever blow due to overload. I have pulled 20A from a 13A fused plug for hours at a time without blowing the fuse. It got a bit hot though.

You shouldn't really have 13A in anything other than a big kettle, heater or power heavy appliance. A PC would usually be on 5A, 3A if it's something like the Revo which draws next to nothing.

:(

All the leads I've checked have 13A fuses. I have a feeling they actually bought "kettle leads".

Remember the fuse is only there to protect the cable. So in most cases a 13A fuse is not unreasonable.

Certainly don't bother changing the 13A in a kettle lead for something lower, there is no point.

Especially with my one jigga-watt power supply!
