So yeah, fuck. One in every twelve people in the world is now a member of Facebook.
Granted, not all of them are active members, but still, fuck.

Love it or hate it (I hate it with a grudging admiration), that's awfully impressive.

I read an article a while back about their infrastructure. They have more servers than the number of days I've been alive, by a not-insignificant factor. And the article was quite outdated by that point already.

Ironically, as it hits 500million, more and more of the people who've been using it for years are becoming disillusioned with it. It used to be a great social hub with loads of stuff going on. Now it's a slick advertising medium choked up with Farmville and it's derivatives. I used to be a '3 updates a day' type but I haven't changed my status in a week.

Meh. If my Mum didn't use it, I'd get rid.

Not according to the numbers. You might be, but three updates a week is pretty short of the nine a day average.

I wonder how many of the accounts are fakes though. Probably a not insignificant proportion.

It is annoying how those apps encourage the posting of crap on your profile. I don't play Farmville, but I dabble in Frontierville and Treasure Isle and any time it wants to publish something to my profile, I just skip it. I know these games are designed to encourage interaction with other people, but I'd rather that it was kept in-game.

This is pretty much spot on.

When I joined, way back, I liked the clear, rigid profile layout. There wasn't any of the garish Geocities-style background pictures and music that you get on Myspace. Whilst that still holds true, all those profiles that fill up with 'XXX kissed a cow in Mafiaville' etc ruin the look, in my opinion. I spend ages blocking apps too. But then, as I've said before, to me it's the contact book I never got round to keeping (a carte de visite for the 21st Century).

I know that it's a particularly popular game on RLLMUK to create tons of fake accounts for the purposes of posting gay porn to the walls of groups like "STOP MUZLINS FROM TURNING AR BABEES INTO BOMZ".

I signed into facebook for the first time in a while yesterday[1] to report Sarah Palin's "don't build a mosque at ground zero" as racist/hate speech. Felt good.

[1] I still use it on my phone but have a policy of never logging desktop browsers into it to stop them sniffing my browsing habits. More out of boody mindedness than any genuine fear.

The number of (people claiming to be) attractive blondes who have requested me as a friend, and oddly only have 500 male friends and no female ones probably outnumbers the amount of real friends what I have added.

Mine. Sort of. I mean, it's me and I don't use it for sinister purposes but I use a fake name.

Sick and tired of the ex trying to hunt me down and stick knives in my back.

I do like it though, immensely. Without it I would most definitely lose contact with all of my Yank brethren.

Plus this way I can call them all names at once :D

Text book Facebook scam. Once you add them (which desperate idiots usually do) they have access to all of the things you didn't want to give any one access to.

It's actually sickeningly embarassing to see how many mutual friends you have when you go to block them. 8)

Cow Clicker: a Facebook game about Facebook games.

Quote:
You get a cow. You can click on it. In six hours, you can click it again. Clicking earns you clicks. You can buy custom "premium" cows through micropayments (the Cow Clicker currency is called "mooney"), and you can buy your way out of the time delay by spending it. You can publish feed stories about clicking your cow, and you can click friends' cow clicks in their feed stories. Cow Clicker is Facebook games distilled to their essence.

I first found out about Facebook in 05 in the first year of uni and you had to have a student email address to access it. And there was no farmville.

I giving some thought to actually using Facebook.
Step one, obviously, it to get rid of the people that I don't actually know.

Is there an easy way to do that? I want to tick a load of boxes and hit 'delete', not go through to each profile individually and press the button.

Aha, found it!

I've probably deleted a load of people from on here - don't be offended, if I didn't recognise your name or photo I just smacked the button a bit (unless you were fit, obv).

Block all the apps, block everyone you work with pre-emptively and set it so that you don't show up on searches and it's a lot better.

Cripes. Sinister Facebook have 'upgraded' their instant messaging service and it's now even crapper. It's almost as if they want us to go elsewhere.

(Of course, I've not actually tried the chat functions on Google Plus yet, but it'd be hard to come up with something even more unusable)

Are we talking this crap up the right, then? Previously, you clicked bottom right and a list of those online came up... now the whole right of the screen is filled with contacts who are offline. You've got two options once it kicks in - greyed out with a 'try it now' button, or trying it now, and never being able to go back.

Fuck Facebook, it's that chavvy pub you hate that certain people you don't want totally gone from your nightlife always exclusively drink in.

Yes. Except I can only see it if I maximise the window.

Aye. Why tell me who is offline? I only care about who is online.

Getting to that point, yes.

I saw that sidebar the other day. Turned it off immediately. I see that there's an icon for it on the left side to turn it back on again. I don't use the chat so I'll leave it of as it pushes the rest of the site over to the left.

Facebook chat, like so many stuid bastard chat offerings, hasn't quite worked out how to work out if the person you're about to message really is online. It says they're online, but the instant you click on their name to send a message it decides that, oh, actually, that person isn't online. The new sidebar can get to fuck.

Though Google's chat seems somewhat less bollocks. What they ALL really need though is the integration Microsoft's Messenger of many names and yahoo messenger have. I want to talk to my FB, Yahoo and MSN friends through google chat, in my G+ website and Android app.
