Grim... mentioned this in the bargains thread but I thought it would deserve a thread of it's own, it's not often you get things for free!

I don't know much about the game other than it's an old UT mod (I think?!?) and it's meant to be ace.

I've added it to my wishlist so I'll be downloading it tonight. Anyone that wants to join me is more than welcome!

My Steam ID is TheXboxVision.

Well, I will try, but I am not sure if my PC can run the game.

Hmm I mentioned it first but maybe you have me on ignore :D

It's quite good fun but is basically just Gauntlet with jazzy graphics and a RPG element. The more you play the more powerful you and your weaponry become.

It has made my eyes go funny though so not sure I will be playing much.

Minimum system specs :-

Minimum:
o OS: Windows® 7 / Vista / Vista64 / XP
o Processor: Pentium 4 3.0GHz
o Memory: 1 GB for XP / 2GB for Vista
o Graphics: DirectX 9 compatible video card with 128 MB, Shader model 2.0. ATI X800, NVidia 6600 or better
o Hard Drive: At least 2.5 GB of free space
o Sound: DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card

I read your mention of it in the PC thread after Grims... Nemmie so you're correct, you were there first!

I haven't played a game in ages on my PC and subsequently, forgot about all that minimum specs gumph.

I haven't a clue if it'll work on mine now.

Damn straight!

Doing a lot of photo stuff tonight as my trial on Lightroom is about to go clunk, but may sneak in some more later.

As ever, the more panicky you get the better. Reloads are brutal!

That was a great game with Pod just now, but a bit too much for me in the end. I think the campaign is just one level too long. Plus I'm not overly thrilled with the burden on keeping Tech guy alive at the end of maps, it sort of destroys the pulling off a glorious surprise win you get in L4D2.

Had to leave without completing the last level on the campaign, my eyes went all funny. There was a super bit where I managed to complete the final battle midway through on my own and out of ammo by running around screaming before throwing myself into the endzone flailing with melee against giant aliens. That was funny.

I liked this as a UT 2k4 mod.... except it was extraordinarily hard. It required team work, planning, nerve and balls. Unfortunately I only ever played it LAN parties where tossers would run around with the flame thrower, not position the auto-guns, run directly into your line of fire, not be capable of following orders and/or die taking the one piece of equipment vital to the mission with them.

Cunts.

Still, may try this.

I think that might still be a problem. :)

It's not incredibly hard, managed to get up to the last level of the first campaign without incident. My main beef is that as a tech guy I hang back and I can't properly open up if people charge ahead and mill around as if its your standard FPS. A proper fixed formation and being comfortable with the movements of others is greater than sidestepping like a loon. If you're under arty-fire, roll or sidestep as last resort. Otherwise, hold the fucking line! They're fucking melee monsters!

I think the remedy for this game's problems is to:

1: Allow everyone to hack, but the technician to be the only one who can deploy sentries, say, or activate existing base defences.

2: Get rid of that bastard 'infected' killer. It makes you fail the level if there's no healer left.

3: Everyone should be able to use the occasionally mission-critical flame-thrower. Ripley could use one, why can't I?

Otherwise it's great. Looks lush, is thrilling and the maps aren't TOO big or confusing. My eyes hurt after an hour, though.

Play in first person. Note, I have not tried this yet as the Steam servers are inaccessible for me ATM.

Well I think it's bloody great. Finished the whole campaign last night and had the added joy of sniping Grim in the head along the way (although unintentional it was a great shot).

Apparently there are already other campaigns available but no idea how good they are, will most probably give them a try later on as I am hooked.

When I tried last night it took forever to get onto a server.. even then, it worked only once out of about 8 tries.

Not good.

They don't have servers as such, so the fault probably lays with the people hosting the games.

I only joined three games in total, but all were fine.

What's your steam name?

It could, but Windows should ask you about that as soon as it tries to connect.

Well, I use Bullguard as my firewall software and it did ask when it first started and as normal, I allowed it permanently but with Bullguard.. I'm never sure.

Yeah the problem will be that the person hosting has a poor computer or connection or both. I was hosting for most of last night and luckily my connection and PC seem to do well at the job.

I prefer it with a pad. Also, playing this online without voice is surely half-the-fun-missing-mental?

Got my first prestige and well on my way to the second. Even having good luck with random public games today but a real pity they nerfed the Tesla in last nights update.

Still got my trusty Vindicator shotgun though. :)

I've a shonky mic, but it's still in a box unpacked. However, I see now the awesome that is using your mouth to talk into things so that people can hear you as you make your man move whilst you listen to other people, so I shall try to be more vocal in't future.

They nerfed the Tesla? :(

Yes, completely. You can't kill anything with it now, only stun so somebody else can kill them. Well you might get one or two kills in a level.

# The Vindicator’s grenade explosion effect should no longer crash users running a GTX260 graphics card.
# Fixed a bug where marines would continue to be buffed by the Damage Amp if they were standing in it when it expired.
# Fixed ammo usage on the Tesla Cannon to properly decrease 4 times a second instead of 2 (doubled clip size to account for this).
# Rebalanced Tesla Cannon’s damage to encourage it to be used more as a support weapon.
# Tesla Cannon will now use ammo slowly even when it isn’t damaging something.
# Fixed Unicode text chat

a) Use mumble, in that case
b) How doesn't it work? You just plug the mic in! If it works in sound recorder, it'll work in a Source game :S

In that it didn't work.

Works fine in "listen to what you're saying" in sound properties, but didn't work in game.(Indeed, if it had worked in game, I think you'd have complained bitterly, what with the setup having been for the internal mic, not the headset mic, and therefore deafening)

No error message, just show the spalsh screen and returns to the desktop.

Funny, could have sworn I was playing on a server with you yesterday or was that another Mr Dave?

That problem is solved by a restart but I expect you found that out already. Lets not turn this into another anti PC gaming thread.

Ahh ok. Did you try restarting then? The back to desktop issue is normally solved by doing that.

Well, Steam voice chat appears to be shit on two counts:
1) it directs the other person's voice to the main game audio stream and not to my headset. I can find forum threads from people going back to 2007 asking for that to be fixed, but it doesn't seem to offer it, correct?

2) in the Test Microphone screen, talking into my 360 headset isn't registering on the signal strength doodad. It is registering in Device Settings and is set as the audio input device in the Steam settings page.

Cocking PCs.

There is now a mumble server running on eggwan.com. Get mumble from here, follow the (easy) client instructions, add a server, and enter eggwan.com in the server address. You can put in anything as a user name.

You know it's push to talk in-game, right? :o Though I think you can set it to always talk if you want.

I had this problem. Restarting steam makes it magically go away.

Steam voice chat isn't the same as the ingame voice chat. But you can't change where the input comes from in either case, which is annoying. Nor can you change where it outputs. Then again, I don't know of any PC game that lets you redirect the speach to a different place to where the main game audio is going :(

Does it work in soundrecorder/audacity etc?

I've been playing this again this week. It's ace. We should play it again - I've got loads of good maps but most of them are really hard if you don't have four people (although there's only one we didn't manage to do).

That is all.
