Removed two bushes whilst listening to The Bugle podcast in the pouring rain and then broke up the ground loads whilst listening to This American Life (it was about notions of defending oneself, quite interesting) and implanted the pair of Hostas, the tall plant and the green tall plants, and composted the remains. It looks pretty pro. I, however, look like a mud monster.

As I don't know who he is, I don't have Chinny's build-up hate to fall back on, and (from what I just read) I think it's bollocks that he's been fired for saying "nazi".

I love this story as it implies that there is an acceptable level of drunkeness in Australia's zoos.

Nah. The word Nazi is a perfectly reasonable way to describe someone who is taking things too far. I find people who complain about this sort of thing most odd (although, I suspect, they were people who disliked him, rather than people who were actually offended).

I love how he leaves the pub, just for a quick round of crocodile-riding, gets his leg torn to shreds, then returns to the pub. Epic.

Gaunt lost it. He was unprofessional and deserves his arse to be kicked. I've worked in that environment, there is no excuse for his behaviour. You don't go on a uncontrolled rant because you have "issues".

It's talk radio. I thought uncontrolled ranting at people was pretty much it's raison d'etre.

Did he call anyone an 'ignorant pig'? That's a bit harsh for a host, one would think.

Sure, and he should apologise to the person he said it to (if it was undeserved). Not the public.

The host should be in control. I used to work at a station that had a phone in after the show I worked on. I was still around working on other stuff so I could see it going on through the glass. The host would have to stir up the audience by getting them to phone in but was in control at all times. He'd say stuff and sound worked up when in reality he was sitting there with a grin on his face. He'd spout off some bollocks designed to work the OAP's listening into a frenzy and then lean back in his chair and wait for the phones to go red hot.

Gaunt lost it. He obviously had some kind of issues with the interviewee.

And I personally think Sky should have been done for the Boulton stuff and that other woman as well. The problem is Boulton is actually pretty shit and just lost it because he couldn't cope. Could you imagine Paxman doing that?

So do you think the BBC should have fired John Sweeney for his Scientology rant ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxqR5NPhtLI )?

There are seriously mitigating circumstances there. They probably wouldn't have left it in the edit if they felt there wasn't.

I don't agree with that, to be honest. I think that the term Nazi should only be reserved for literal Nazis, because otherwise it cheapens the word and by extension the mass crimes committed by Nazis. Though I'm not someone who's a knee-jerk offendee who'd rush off and contact OfCom about it*.

* unless it was aimed at a German as a general insult at the nationality, or something.

That's what happens with words over time, though.

I disagree, as I don't think that there should be conditions for when a word used is acceptable, and when it is not. This is because it then becomes, once again, a pejorative word, and the cycle completes itself.

For obvious examples see "gay", "fag".

I think you're doing it right.

I think we should say "depends on the context" and go back to reading the grauniad where they're not to bothered.
EDIT: What I think I mean is that it is some people getting upset on other's behalf at times.

EDIT 2: apparently it's "amelioration" is the word I am looking for.

Why is it that I never had any problems with the post office (barring the miserable twats in the hayes town branch being mostly useless) until the gubmint started trying to privatise it?

All I want is to have a parcel redelivered or moved for me to collect it. The website is full of piss and advertising for their bajillion insurance or broadband schemes, and lots of terrible names for services with nine TM marks in every sentence in case someone tries to er, steal the name "Recorded Signed For" (because the market for very bad names for basic postal services is v. cut-throat). But can I do anything online? Nope. I have to call the number on the little card. The number which leads to a repetitive, unskippable tutorial recording that rambles on about how easy it is to collect from the depot (no it isn't, dear. That's why I'm calling, you idiots), then repeats the information on the website. When you're finally allowed to choose an option, it claims they're experiencing an extremely large volume of calls, and then dials to the local delivery office. Or possibly Beijing. It's hard to tell, as there is never a fucking answer. I've left two messages, and today had the phone ring endlessly without answer, and then it was engaged twice.

An engaged phone. It's 2010, for fuck's sake, and they have one telephone line and no message service. And now I have to go to work, missing them again (the website advises that "Simply call the number on the card left by Royal Mail and choose when to collect your item. This must be at least 24 hours later and after midday", which is highly reassurring when the office you are calling closes at midday).

If they try to get me to pay for redelivery, I'm going to write a letter. Oh yes.

Probably that they've given your IP Profile a kick at the exchange. It should stabilise after a few days.

Fingers crossed, eh? My phone line is fuzzy as well.

Ah, could be other types of testing go on as well.

Oddly, I've not had any problems. I arranged to have a book delivered to my house (I usually have stuff delivered to my parents as they're always in) but, thanks to some over-zealous packing, wouldn't fit through the letterbox. I arranged, online, to have the parcel redelivered to my local post office and collected it from there. Even more oddly, when I told them that they hadn't charged me the fee for redelivery, they told me that they're not allowed to charge for it at the post office, so it didn't cost me a thing. :)

I fear change and the new BBC news website is no exception.......

I'm hoping it's just a case of getting used to it, but it seems a bit 'big' and in-your-face. I preferred the more subtle look of the old site.

The sports part seems unchanged, maybe they are doing it in stages to ease the pain.
