I needed a valid photo ID for something, but all I had was a my passport, which expired last year, and is thus now invalid.

So... Short of the expensive option of renewing my passport, what other options are there? I know that a driving license is one, but as I can't drive for health reasons, that's not much use.

What's it for? I still used my passport even though it had run out..

If not, what about those "prove it" cards they used to advertise in off licences?

Err, it was for entry to a Labour party leadership hustings event.

Incidentally I'm old enough to have a university degree, but young enough to be IDed for alcohol every so often. It's not uncommon for me to walk away from a supermarket alcohol-less as I can't prove my age.

Would you be able to get a provisional driving license?

Ah, good idea there. Google-me-do!

"You can apply for your first British provisional driving licence online if you:

are currently not prevented from driving for any reason

have a valid UK passport or another form of identity"

Looks promising. Only snag, is it actually recognised as something 'proper'? Can't really tell just from the website.

Has/had to be a photo ID for my requirements.

BTW, I honestly we had a national ID card, just as long as it wasn't a compulsory one... That would be handy.

You should be able to use an expired passport as long as your name hasn't changed and you can prove changes of address or whatever.

When people check your passport for proof of age it will be very rare they also check the expiry date. And if they do, you can point out that your date of birth didn't change just because your ability to go abroad ran out.

This happened to me yesterday. It happens to me about 50% of the time I try to buy a bottle of wine actually, and I'm coughthirtyonecough

That's very helpful, thanks. :) I needed a valid one for the situation I was in, but I can't imagine anywhere else would object, for the day-to-day things I might need it for.

Happens loads to my girlfriend too, because she is not that tall. She does have her German national ID card as proof, but unfortunately you always get the odd moron who rejects it with a cry of "uuurgh, that's in forrun". >:(

That reminds me, I need to sort mine out.

Ugh. I don't mind the money so much as I do the endless pissing about with tedious forms and digging through old documents. And don't even get me started on countersigning, where you have to have some kind of personal relationship with someone who doesn't know you personally. Sorry, I don't know very many MPs or generals or bishops.

Grow a beard (of sorts). Stopping people asking me for ID is the sole reason I have mine.

There was apparently, at one point, talk of an actual 'ID card'. One that, if you didn't drive, or your passport had expired, could be used to evince your identity.

Didn't take.

I was hoping that would happen, but without being compulsory, or relatively high cost. An optional proper National ID card would be very handy. They have those in the rest of the EU, without becoming near-totalitarian states (well, let's forget about Italy for a moment).

I didn't realise it was so expenisve for a new passport. Mine has just expired and I need a new one if I want to go to London in August. I was meant to be going to get a new iPhone today but looks like I'm spending £80 on a passport instead :(

Has anyone else had to follow the stupid rules set out for the submitting of new photos for these sorts of things? I had to replace my driving license photo a couple of months back. No smiling. No hair on face. No makeup. No glasses. I had to listen to Tyra Banks and at least got a "smeyes" on mine, whereas Hell's Bells looks like a frightened deer in a spotlight about to be shot by a firing squad.

No smiling? Why? That is daft, I could easily see someone not recognising my photo as being me if I wasn't smiling in it but when I do I have a big daft lopsided rubber smile with a dimple on one side and so it is quite recognisable.

Same here, but it's not 100% effective. I've been asked for ID a couple of times since. Including when I was buying red wine, lamb, a pile of herbs and vegetables. I don't know what 17 year olds the twat on the counter thought went around buying rosemary and mushrooms, but I got pretty bloody pissed off actually, as oddly enough I didn't take my passport to the shop to buy dinner, and a red wine sauce without red wine would have been more than slightly gauche.

For my first passport a few years back, I got into a massive argument with some prick at the post office in Hayes town because he insisted that my picture didn't fit the guidelines. The fact that the little measuring device he used to judge it was visibly older than the Act of the Union didn't seem to dissuade him. In the end, I called him a miserale fool and went to a different post office instead, where they processed it without question.

The first post office closed down a few months later. I felt distinctly less sorry about it than I would have otherwise.

I'm yet to possess the requisite testicular fortitude to grow an adequate beard at 25 years old. Fortunately I always carry my driver's license with me.

I used to carry my driving license in my wallet, but since having to replace it at unnecessary cost I haven't carried it anywhere with me.
No doubt this will come to bite me on the ass at some point, at which time I'll probably try and show them my credit card to prove I'm over 18.

No offence to Beex beardies, but I think they're largely played out. I like epic ones; your Neidharts and Von Tills.

However, the Isis fan beard as I call it, that faux-intellectual, 'I listen to good music', one. The full beard that manage to look bizarrely unmanly... not really a fan.

I grew a beard about a decade ago. I liked it at the time. I think it's like those alien earwigs from Star Trek... wanna say 2. They take over your mind, and it's only when you're free of them that you attain any sort of perspective.

Pretty sure you only need to present photographic ID to board the plane, an actual passport isn't required. Unfortunately I can't say I speak from experience, since my passport is the only photographic ID I own so I have used it by default on any internal flights I've taken.

In all fairness, the kid on the counter does stand to lose slightly more than your having to go to an offy to get some wine for your dinner, as there's fines for the person that sold you the booze (which is a major fucking hit) if you are underage, and fines for the company.

So I wouldn't feel too aggrieved by it. You're purchasing a controlled substance, after all, and it's a privilege, not a right to have it.

Except that they don't when someone is clearly over 17. I've sold enough alcohol to know the risks, and to know when someone is just being a bloody idiot.

Also, she was about thirty five.
