I've been listening to In Our Time with Melvyn Bragg, they are doing Æthelstan and it got me to thinking, what games of repute set in historical Britain are there? I'm willing to accept games where you can be Britain, like maybe Civilisation (I don't really play that stuff much) against other countries. But for Britain games specifically I can only seem to think of Defender of the Crown, which is getting on a bit.

Ideally I'm hoping people aren't going to suggest Jet Set Willy or Hovver Bovver just to be funny, because it isn't.

I'm assuming Pete will probably have played a good few in his time.

The Chaos Engine is set in Victorian England. ;)

Their Finest Hour is about the Battle of Britain and the RAF of that era.

Isn't resistance set here? I seem to remember a fuss about a church.

Lords of the Realm managed to turn medieval agricultural management into an addictive and entertaining game. "Rotate! ROTATE I SAY!"

The Clue was a likeable postwar crime caper. A bit fiddly and frustrating, but very into the period. It really does deserve a remake, the concept's far from tapped out and it could be done pretty cheaply, I'd imagine.

Resistance is set in alternative sci fi history World War 2, where the whole of Northern England is invaded by absurdly over the top cockneys. And Russian mutants.

The various Sherlock Holmes games are probably a bit obvious.

I don't know if that's really going far back enough for you though. The Germans have done lots of Renaissance era trading games like the Patrician where your home base could be London or Liverpool or Edinbrrrrrrrgh, but that's probably cheating a bit.

Cultures 2 had a level set in vaguely early medieval England - you could kill Robin Hood and invade York (I think it was York, anyway).

It's funny, now that I think about it, but I really can't think of many that are properly set here more than a century or two ago. There must be a Civil War sim out there somewhere, surely?

Good one Dim. :)

I bet there's loads of games on the Spectrum and Amiga set in historical Britain, both formats being home to many games with very distinct feelings of Britishness.

CCS did a couple of wargames from that era on the Speccy. Cromwell at War and Wars of the Roses if I remember rightly. [EDIT]God bless World of Spectrum, yes I do remember rightly.

You can probably find dozens of hardcore war games about the War of the Roses and the Civil War and Victorian Empire-growing and such about in the depths of the interwebs, but if hexes aren't your thing it might be trickier.

There's Adventures of Robin Hood on the Amiga, although that might be considered 'mythological' rather than historical.

I keep wishing for an Xbox XBLAH update of that. Or Rome AD32.

Oh! Im... oh wait, not really set in Britain. You can "be" england, and it's very period, but that's about it.

(Imperialism, btw).

It's been rendered largely obsolete by television, but has its charms.

Never read it. Never played it. Never seen a LOTR or a Barry Potter.

The first one was shockingly poor (Bad stealth sections ahoy. Also: Very buggy. Also also: appallingly bad controls). Second one is installed, but desire to play isn't overly great.
