For some reason this came into my head on the cycle home from work. What do we reckon are the oldest movies to have had a videogame translation at some point? (irrespective of when the game was made, for example The Warriors came out in the cinemas in 1979 even though the game wasn't until 2005).

Star Wars, The Warriors and Rocky are three films from the late 70s that have all had conversions. there was a Great Escape game on the Spectrum though I'm unconvinced as to whether it was actually an official licence. Obviously the Godzilla character has appeared in tons of games but has there ever actually been a game simply called Godzilla that was essentially a movie licence?

Anyone with other suggestions from the 70s or earlier?

The Godfather? 1972 or 1973, I think.

The Great Escape wasn't an official licence.

Vanishing Point was 1971. Was there an official licenced game? (I'm sure there was a game of that name.)

The hoss has stopped running. The End.

The correct answer was >Eat Self.

Sorry, you have to rewind the tape and wait 15 minutes for it to load to play again.

I assumed so from the mention of Universal City Studios on the cover. There may be other games based on the original version, but I couldn't be arsed to look any further.

That could be the 1976 remake? Has to be if it is an official licence.

*checks IMDB*

Yes! Paramount/Universal for 1976. RKO for 1933.

There was a Laurel & Hardy game on the C64. Now, given it was based on the L&H rather than a specific film, I might be on shaky ground but: the first L&H film, Lucky Dog, was filmed in 1919 and released in 1921 (although this wasn't the Stan & Ollie double act we all know and love - the first of those was 1927's The Second Hundred Years)

Off the top of my head (and I'm not sure which of these are "official".

Dam Busters by US Gold

Towering Inferno on the 2600

The various Tolkien games on the Speccy were official and there have been movies down the years of that.

And of course, the various 8 bit Bond games including Live and Let Die, and The Spy Who Loved Me. There was also a Goldfinger text adventure for the PC. The Domark games were official.

[edit] Not being a SNES owner or Nintendo fan I only just realised you also have Goldfinger on the SNES as well which is an FPS.

Dimrill's back?

First I pick up the most gripping book I've read in a while and enjoy some delicious Black Bomber cheese, now this. Day's turning into a winner!

I liked the first person FPS based on that really, really, really old film where you could kit your soldier out with upgradable levels of white sheets and had to do a siege mission where you protect American white folk from some sort of scary dudes with black faces - I think it was a clone army of Al Jolson. It had a thrilling ending where just as you were about to beaten by their howling, eye rolling, scat-singing numbers (I think the game made out they were jazz-mutants or something) you got relieved by a cavalry charge of your similarly white-sheet attired mates.

Can't remember the name. Steamboat Junior?
