Hello.
My credit card has more breathing space than I thought. SPENDY TIME!

I may have over-engineered my 'component choosing process' a little, but feel free to have a look and laugh at my hungover choices:
http://www.fullonrobotchubby.co.uk/zomgrig/index.php

You can click in the table cells to choose them, and then it'll add up the total at the bottom of the table.
Then you can click on 'Create a link to save your selections' and it'll give you a link to post here.

Yeah, I might - that wouldn't fit on the ENCHOOSINATOR, though.

In all seriousness, I am probably going to get an iMac when I move house. I can't really justify a power Mac, as I'd never push it.

You got a kick ass one though? You need a kick ass one.

Mine is 2 years old and is still kick ass. First computer since the 16 bit days that didn't go immediately out of date when I laid out my cash and its resale value would be excellent if I was looking to upgrade.

I love Macs... but do they make one as good as your 'Best' config there? If they do, I doubt the price would be in the same league.

Hmmm... experiment time!

Here are my initial thinkings: http://bit.ly/as7tig
Note that I already have 4GB of that RAM to go in it, so it'll be a total of 8. Also note that I need to read up on the PSUs :S

Note that I've had to replace both graphics cards with substantially less powerful models and there's no option for an SSD, so I've left that out entirely.

God yeah. When I got mine I ordered the bare minimum RAM and then ordered up the extra from Crucial.

Same for the HD's. Only got the boot drive from Apple and the other 3 came from Ebuyer.

The RAM and HD install was totally pain free. I've been tinkering inside computer since the 80's and Apple have done their homework. The HD slots are a joy that I'd only previously seen on servers. You don't even need a screwdriver to put the drives into the mounts if you have nimble fingers.

Out of date assumptions. On Apple.com right now, to take the base Macbook from 2Gb to 4Gb is £81. The 4Gb kit from Crucial is £93 (note that this leaves you with 2Gb of surplus RAM, which has some resale value). Ebuyer shows £90 for 4Gb too.

"I wanted to keep it simple."

Let's run this statement through the Zio - Everyone Else translator:

"I couldn't be arsed to visit more than one site."

Yeah, if you plumped for the lowest possible RAM and the lowest possible hard disc and bought cheaper equivalents yourself, you'd save a load of money. I'd contend you'd still be paying more than Grim...'s 'Best' level system, the system that includes a £400 MOTHERBOARD as part of it's spec, for a less powerful system.

It would be a nice computer though.

I'm shocked at that. I bet it won't stay that way though, it's the first time in over a decade of Mac ownership that I've heard Apple being cheaper for RAM.

Their ram has been quite reasonable for some time now. Their HDDs can fuck right off though - they're charging £450 for a 2TB drive on the PowerMacs

It may be more expensive but you can sell it at and make that back at the end of life.

Yes some of the components aren't as good, but the key thing is that you get a system that, component failure aside, will work reliably. It's the first computer I've had since the Amiga that I just plugged in and it worked. Nothing to install, no shit to remove. Just works.

Yes my little Revo did that as well but I did have to spend half hour removing pre-installed shit from the system.

It'll be my main "general shit" pc, so coding, playing games (occasionally), converting video to work on my PS3, shit like that.
Unless the Revo can run four monitors, I think it's out ;)

Peole spend thousands on second hand computers? That I did not know, but I fail to the logic in that as the pace of develoment and decreasing costs of computers make it an odd choicebut then again I suppose it is up to people to make that choice and there's nowt as queer as folk and half of London was at Cable Street but probably not my Grandmother what with her being Irish and everything.

Stay away from high end Antecs the airflow is terrible. Look at the Coolermaster HAF among others.

Ram - Corsair. PSU - Corsair.

Stay away from PNY tech their warranty is full of holes and their RMA is an absolute nightmare.

Leave the Corsair H50 out. Best £30 cooler right now is the Titan Fenrir (bar none) and at the top end look up the Noctua NH D-14. It poos on the Corsair H50 and costs the same. It's also far quieter given that it uses 140mm fans. It's a breeze block of alu.

http://forum.overclock3d.net/showthread ... tua-NH-D14

If you really must go 480 GTX then prepare for heat and high leccy bills. The 5870 is where it's at right now. In particular, this one

http://forum.overclock3d.net/showthread ... -V2-Review

As for the CPU? Consider the Thuban 6 cored 1090. Priced at around £250 it gives the I7 930 a bloody hard slap.

http://forum.overclock3d.net/showthread ... re-AM3-CPU

And pair it will one of these.

http://overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.p ... =MB-398-AS

Over all you will spend far less and go a lot faster.
