Before I stick them on fleaBay, does anyone want to buy one of my laptops?

Acer Aspire One A150
Intel Atom 1.6GHz
1GB RAM, 120GB HD.
Standard battery.
Includes charger and the slip case that comes with them.
Currently set up with Windows XP on a partition, and Mac OS X 10.5.5 on another partition.
I've removed the wireless card that was in it originally and replaced it with a card that's Mac OS X compatible.
All in good condition, just a few fingerprints and a bit of dirt on the keyboard really.

Asking price: £150.

Dell Inspiron 1545 - Red
Intel Core Duo 2.2GHz
2GB RAM, 160GB HD.
Standard battery.
Includes charger.
Currently set up with Windows 7 Ultimate, licence key was bought off eBay which is apparently dodgy, but I didn't know this at the time. It validates and comes up as a Windows Genuine thingie anyway so that should be OK.
All in good condition, just a few fingerprints and a bit of dirt on the keyboard really.

Asking price: £275.

Pics of both to follow.

I'll be getting the pics up tonight, took some last night but they were shit 'cos they were against my black sofa. Will see if I can dig out the white paper I've got and take some proper pics on that.

Do we have a generic "buy my stuff" thread?

I've got some crapgreat stuff kicking around my flat that I should really get rid off, but really can't be arsed with the hassle of ebay, especially as most of it is electronic kit and all the resulting ebay scammers and morons that will come along with trying to ebay it all.

I'd much prefer to sell my stuff the the scammers and morons here :D

Just be wary that while the regulars might be fine, you will have little protection.

YES I AM STILL BITTER ABOUT THAT FIVER I PAID FOR ATARI GAMES THAT NEVER TURNED UP ON (World of Linda - Ed).

Oh indeed, but the "protection" on ebay/paypal is laughable these days anyway, particulary if you are the seller.

I would recommend starting a new thread... especially if you have Managa DVDs for sale!

Apologies, but my kitchen floor is now looking very much as if it will need replacing, therefore rendering me cashless for a while. Otherwise, I may well have.

Is the Acer user friendly? I.e. boot up and go. My dad is looking for something that he will basically use to go on the internet and send emails (all of which i will need to teach him from new)

Alternatively if anyone has any suggestions as to what would be suitable!?

Depending on the money he's got to spend, that's the sort of thing the iPad is good at.
The Acer is as user friendly as the OS on it and the way it's set up. Booting into XP and just having a few icons on the screen is all well and good, but what about keeping the updates to the OS and the malware software up to date?

The Acer is just a small Windows laptop really, no more or less user-friendly than most other laptops.

Hmm, thanks for the advice. I was considering the Ipad (minimum memory would be good) however he lives in the middle of nowhere, and i don't think there's 3G coverage, so i'm not sure how i'd provide the wi-fi it would need simply (unless he could leech off a friendly neighbour...) without another computer.

Well, there's those mifi (or whatever it's called) mini wifi hotspots, which come with a 3G SIM.

Not much more expensive than the 3G dongle you'd need for a netbook or laptop anyway, I think.

Er... With a wireless router?

The only thing you'd need to do is periodically take a laptop over to update the iPad's software, and do the initial setup (which, annoyingly, has to be done via plugging it into iTunes).

The ISP tends to send you one ready set up unless you ask them not to.

How are you on the internet at home?

I am such a ruddy luddite! My past threads are a good indicator of this. I am online through a wireless router but the settings are controlled through a wired connection to my desktop. It hadn't occurred to me that he could just get a wireless router from an ISP and run it without a lappy or desktop running through it.I thought without a PC, and just an Ipad it would be difficult to change settings etc if required on the router?

Taxi to the Belm thread anyone?

Unless the router software uses Flash (which I've never come across) you can control if from the iPad if you can connect to it wirelessly. So take a laptop with you the first day unless you need to plug directly into it.

The little cheap netgear router I have can happily be set up from the iPhone even, so I don't think you'll have any problems.

Just checked and the Dell has only 2GB of RAM (not 3 as I first thought) and a 160GB HD (not 250). CPU is indeed 2.2GHz (2.16GHz according to the BIOS).

Have updated the first post.
