What I need is some background music that is free of charge.

The place where I work do business events and as a bit of background, while people are filing in etc, we would like some music playing in the room just to fill the silence.

Now, we obviously can’t play any chart music as we’d need to pay for that but can anyone recommend anywhere we can get royalty free stuff from? Or would anyone like to supply any?

The venues that we’re holding the events should have PRS licenses so there’s no need to worry about that.

We’re looking for lift/background music.. nothing specific really.. just something to fill a gap.

There's plenty of free music on the Internet. MySpace might be a good place to start.

Not free but good quality, cheap and fits the bill:

I think you might be giving yourself a bit more work than's needed. Check the venues PRS license(s), most venues you can play whatever music you like as it's already licensed/paid for, so you don't have to use royalty free music.
