Hi there!

I want/need/demand some cheap, quick games to play for when MrsA and I don't have time for EPIC Carcassone and she won't shut the fuck up about wanting a fucking pet. 2 players, playtime no longer than 10 minutes, they've got to be interesting and slightly quirky.

After reading (someone's blog- Ed) Button Men seems like it fits the bill, but I dunno which version to buy.

Also, recommend some other ones for 3 players or more, quick and quirky preferred once again, for when I've got to suffer guests.

In retrospect, asking a question here about something that requires social interaction for longer periods of time, and something that doesn't involve some skinnerbox type counter increasing was really rather optimistic. Never mind, eh?

In the meantime, I've downloaded some of these and am choosing what to spend up to USD$14 on.

I've ordered:

Devil Bunny NEEDS A Ham Board Game
Totally Renamed Spy Game
Chessex Speckled 7 Dice Set - Lotus
Cube Farm Card Game

I think I need 5 more d6, though.

Oooh, I have this same problem.
Carcassone takes a long time and most other games need more than 2 players to not be pointless.

Meant that we played chess last night - which is nice and quick when you suck at the game.

Munchkin!
(although remove the Kneepads of Allure or at least apply a house rule of roll a dice, on a 5/6 they work, only one try per round)

Mmm. The 2 player game I've had the most success with, in terms of people liking it, is lost cities The 30 minute time it lists can be ignored - that's for several games and the points are added up for each player to see who the overall winner is.

(It is essentially a card game with 5 suits, but cards are an excellently cheap way of getting many 2 player games)

All the other 2 player games I have are a fair bit longer.

Recoomending the Spy game. A quick trial shows muchos opportunity for strategy, backstabbiness and hilarity. Which is good. My new set of dice look nice as well.

Played Spy Alley last night with friends. Excellent bluffing game. Quick (<45m) and awesome.

When I move house I'm wanting to host a BeeX board and card games night. Should be a laugh.

Me too! If we ever got around to organising the 'Be Excellent To Each Other In A Cottage' weekend, we could play MANY games.

Mostly of Mafia...

Been playing the real life version for years - but am still not very good at it.

How does mafia work in real life with regards to private communications and night actions?

Are there any good guides?

Nighttime - everyone shuts their eyes. Person running the game says 'mafia awake' or something similar, then follows a lot of hand gesturing by the two mafioso, before the victim is chosen. They shut their eyes again, then the detective is asked to wake to point at who he wants to investigate. 'I heard movement' is a common reason to accuse someone.

During the day stage, people will accuse everyone but eventually you can get two candidates for lynching. We gave them a last defence (usually 'the probability of me being the mafia again is ... ' or the classic 'it's not me'), then a quick show of hands before dispatching one of them.

It relies on trusting people not to peep, but in all the years I've played it that's never been a problem. Mostly, the person running it needs to be able to chair the daystages so they don't drag out too often, but it's usually clear who the two candidates for the lynch vote are.

< http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mafia_game > for basic overview.

During a six hour traffic jam five of us played a cutdown travel version, with one mafioso, no detective, and one murder. It passed the time, but wasn't the most challenging of variants.

I'm entirely confused by the original post -- Carcassone takes about 30-60 minutes with 2 players? (I'm most familiar with Hunters and Gatherers, only having played original blue-box twice).

PS:

Why not get one of the standalone sequels to Carc? A lot of them, i.e. The City, The Castle, & The Discovery are meant to be much quicker and intended for 2 players.

I only know this because I was just planning on buying one of these and read some reviews RIGHT THIS INSTANT :o
