My 360 has just been hit with one red light and a e73 error - must have been upset as i turned on thr Wii today...

(just) Out of warranty and standard repair is 81 pounds - i'm tempted to just but a new console, and sell the broken one for parts on ebay - any idea where the best deal is - i take it all have HDMI ports now? Or is there anyway to force a red ring of death so MS will pay for the repair!!

Dammit, my TA ranking is going to plummet further now...

If it's the age old problem then simply repair it yourself. Do some googling on reflowing the solder. It's done by putting the board in the oven for a few minutes.

Cheers, but I don't much fancy that. I'd like something reliable and anything i solder is unlikely to be that!
And before anyone else asks, no, i haven't tried flashing the bios yet!

I bought an arcade, which has HDMI, when it happened to me and simply transferred the hard disk and content across. £124 on Amazon - not sure if that's the best deal, but that's pretty good. Certainly better than spending £81 on getting yours fixed, as you'll get a nice new unit with the (is it 3 years?) warranty.

If you fancy RRODing yours, though, wrap it in a towel and switch it on until it catches fire. Then claim it all on household insurance. Just make sure nobody is at home at the time :)

It's actually rather easy and you don't need to solder anything. Basically you remove the mother board and put it in the oven with some foil balls under it. When it gets hot enough the solder melts and reflows itself.

If you're set on getting a new one then definitely Ebay the old one. There are a lot of people who buy them and fix them :)

But that's a tempoary fix at best, JC. Re-melted solder is shite. The stuff MS used was shite to begin with. Add them together and you've got a broken Xbox again this time next month. That's if it worked at all and you didn't melt the whole board under the grill or something.

either buy a new one, or find someone privately that repairs them

my mate fixes them, but only for close friends.
He did my other mates and its lasted another year.
This was done by doing the x clamp mods and adding better fans and stuff.

markh's eggbox is suffering from one red light and not three, so will the RROD fix still work?

Apparently it's the same sort of problem, but localised to the Southbridge/Ethernet area. The RROD fix might work.

Edit - From here

Does the standard repair come with a new warranty?

I got a 3 month (90 day) warranty's on mine after they 'repaired' it from E74 earlier this year (when it was out of warranty for everything apart from the 3 red lights or E74 error) so I'd think a paid repair would be the same - however i'd suggest trying to pick up a cheap arcade unit and selling yours for spares.

If you buy a new arcade you get a full warranty , a machine which will run cooler and quieter - they do also seem to have resolved a lot of the more common faults on them so its less likely you'll get 3 red lights or a major fault in the future.

There was a thread on hotukdeals saying that some Toys R Us had arcade units for £99 but seems to be a bit hit and miss - otherwise i think Amazon is the current cheapest offering with the £125 deal (although i bet there will be someone doing a £99 deal again 'soon')

I'd definitely go for the new Arcade rather than a fix. Shiny new console with three years of warranty for an extra £50 or so is a no-brainer. Plus, you could get one today. And obviously if you were inclined you could recoup some of the costs on eBay with your broken machine.

Cheers as usual chaps, shopto is doing arcades for 119 so that seems pretty decent. I can also rinse some of my paypal funds that way i believe so that sweetens it further. If i can get 20 quid and postage for the old one, that's not too shabby at all. (especially when work will pay the postage...)

Mines was fixed under warrenty but I didnt want to wait without a machine so picked up an arcade unit from Argos - plugging in my drive got everything up and working straght away apart from the installed games (it wont let you play them off the drive except on the machine you installed from) , theres a tool on the Xbox.com website where you can transfer the rights for your downloaded games from one machine to another.

When mine came back I did consider swapping things back and keeping my old one but the new warranty and the other plus's for a new system outweighted the fact that my old one was black and shiney (chrome drive panel) and the new one was just 'grey'

I'd wait for E3 see if a slim 360 is announced or maybe a price cut.

Price cut would be nice but E3 isnt until June , if your machine died today would you like to wait till after June for a new one ?

Bit of a wait without a SexBox, though. But yeah, that'll sting come May June if one is released. Having said that, MS aren't the type to announce something and have it on the shelves within a week.

edit: Oh, price cut, I just assumed you were talking 360 Slim for some reason. I doubt there'll be any sort of price cut announced at E3. Maybe for Christmas to coincide with Natal, but not in May.

He insisted it would be a new core console and not a mere add-on. I can't remember the exact wording, but he definitely lost.

I think the slim is a possibility , and something around getting the bundles sorted out with the 20 and 60 gigs vanishing and possibly even the 120 in favour of the 250 + Natal type add ins with some weird sport and fitness games.

Do we want to have a "E3 Predictions" thread ?

Its down as the 15th - 17th June http://www.e3expo.com/

BTW Doc do you actually mean that he bet you the announcement would be in 2009 ? (so he's a year late already)
And would you have given it to him if the original Natal annoucement was correct ? (Natal would come with an integrated CPU which could be used to bump up the power of the 360)

Yes! E3 predictions thread! I think a Slim is possible as well, but I don't think it'll be on sale immediately after the announcement like an Apple launch, which is why I reckon Mark shouldn't worry about it unless he doesn't mind waiting.

I could imagine a natal slim bundle, I was thinking if theres an announcement for a slim model its a possibility the normal models would be sold off cheaper straight away.

Probably not, I'm a bastard!

I can't remember what we bet now, and I don't have the IM logs.
viewtopic.php?p=243501#p243501
mentions it.

I think there's a fair chance of this, although I equally think we might not see a new model until the run-up to Christmas.

I was playing Oblivion then it froze and the display went all funny and nothing happened. So I tured it off, then, when I turned it on I had 3 glowing red lights.

I am a sad panda now.

I got the instructions on how to send it to them for a fix sent through just now, so that's all good.

I was just about to LEVEL UP on Oblivion as well, and collect my new staff from the Mage's Guild.

My brother (TheChewwy) just had his go up in smoke, but not in a way covered by the warranty.

What's the best cheap deal on a new Eggbox?

Wait and see what happens with the new one, I would suggest. It's supposed to be on sale next week. Your brother might either then pick up a clearance deal on the older model, or be able to get the shiny new one.

Aye, the new one is £200, but it'll probably be available for £190. Pretty sure the price for the old one is going to plummet. I might sell me 120gb one soonish and then get the new slim one when it is out.

I thought it was next week in the US / next *month* for us in the UK.

e.g. PLAY have it as due 16/7

http://www.play.com/Games/Xbox360/4-/15 ... oduct.html

As do Amazon :

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Xbox-360-250GB- ... 102&sr=8-1

I agree if he can wait the prices on 'old' stock should drop right down since any old elite will be the 'hotter / larger' version with 1/2 the size of an Hard disk - I doubt there will be very many of them sold for the £199 asking price - so you should see bargains on them its just the temptation to get another one to be back online *now*

UNCONFIRMED:

Tesco are clearing out their Arcade consoles for £90.
PC World sell them for £119.99, so you could get them to match Tesco to £87.

Apparently he's had it for two years, though I don't believe a word of it. Worth noting he had it for a while before he connected it to Live.

85 quid for a new one from Game... he might be tempted. Does that come with anything?

Fack off. You bet on a new Xbox altogether. A more powerful one. The Elite was the same console in black with a bigger hard disk.
