Last ditch attempt to stop the Bill being passed without process during "the Wash" (which seems a terrible thing to do for anything)

Give this your postcode: http://confirm.38degrees.org.uk/DEB/

And it will give you a number to ring.

I rang mine. It was ace. I got to keep mentioning that I was a Doctor. He is against it.

I sent a reminder email earlier, and pointed out that it would be his mob that had to pick up the pieces and stuff about why Parliament exists. Given he's a barrister, it should be a giggle if I get a response, so I wished him luck in the forthcoming election.

I did some reading up on the contents of this bill earlier, and I can't see how these new laws are even going to be remotely effective in preventing file-sharing or piracy. In order to block access to a website, it sounds as if the Government would have to go to court, prove to the court that a, b and c were happening and that the website in question was not taking any action itself and get an injunction - surely that would take a fair old amount of time, effort and money - in which time the original website might up-sticks and move elsewhere and if not, somebody off-shore is bound to setup a proxy that isn't blocked or some other workaround.

I also read about some study claiming that there are 8 million file-sharers in Britain (that figure sounds suspiciously like it was plucked from somebody's arsehole). Are ISP's seriously going to contemplate banning 8 million paying customers? And even if they're forced to, how are they going to realistically monitor every internet connection in the UK to prove what people are or aren't doing, even without looking at issues like encryption, sites where the content can be legitimate or not (RapidShare and the like and even Dropbox) and the speed of change of technology.

The more I think about it, the more I agree that this should be debated - not on the grounds that it stomps :boots: on everyone's rights, but because it's going to be costly, time-consuming and ineffective.

Minor LOL:

Jeremy Hunt wrote:
I am happy to reiterate my opposition to clause 43, and to say that we are not prepared to let it through as part of the wash-up process. What is needed is a proper reform of copyright law, and my hon. Friend the Member for Windsor (Adam Afriyie) has said that under a new Conservative Government he will ensure that such proposals are put before the House. Let me provide an example of where this is already going wrong. An image of none other than the great Lord Mandelson himself is apparently being used to market a Russian vodka, with the caption, "When only the best is good enough". If ever we needed proof that captions to pirated images can be misleading, surely that is it. We cannot support these measures as they stand-but what an opportunity has been wasted.

Mr Redwood gets a bit grumpy:

Quote:
Mr. Redwood: Is it not an unprecedented discourtesy to the House of Commons for a Government to introduce the Second Reading of a substantial Bill after they have announced that we need a general election? What kind of treatment of the House of Commons is that?

My hon. Friend the Member for West Bromwich, East (Mr. Watson), who is not in his place, rejected the analogy or metaphor suggested by my hon. Friend the Member for Birmingham, Erdington (Mr. Simon) relating to the Sith and Darth Vader. He is back in his place now-I was just referring to him as he appeared-so I can tell him that he is right to take issue with a metaphor with which he does not agree.

He may intervene if he wishes, but I wonder what he would say to a constituent of mine from whom I received a e-mail today saying that he was not going to vote for me or anyone else in my constituency in the general election because he thought that what the Government were doing was the same as what the ayatollahs in Iran and the geriatric dictatorship in China do to curtail internet freedom. That is clearly bonkers-I could be insulting my constituent here, but he has already said that he is not going to vote for me-and profoundly unhelpful.

<chuckles>

Well, my local MP was in a debate about Zimbabwe during this. But then what could I expect from someone who voted very strongly for ID cards, the Iraq war, student top-up fees, anti-terrorism laws; who only voted 50/50 for parliamentary transparency; voted against climate change laws; and voted strongly against investigating the Iraq war. Cheers, MP!

Hmm. Any way to work out who was actually there? I'd hate to berate my MP about non-attendance if she'd actually turned up.

I read the names of who said what, and then looked at the voting records that was linked from tehyworkforyou.

TWFY isn't updated often enough to reflect last night's vote.

30/3 is the last update that publicwhip.org.uk has for all MPs, and that's what feeds TWFY.

Is there a debate transcript available anywhere?

http://www.theyworkforyou.com (as you mentioned) is what I checked. It had the the latest attendance of my MP, not to say he's actually bothered to attend much – his last trip before yesterday was a month ago.

As I said, TWFY hasn't updated any attendance since 30/3, so it's useless as a source for last night's attendance.

Oooh, that's my MP too. I didn't think you were in Lewisham East.

She wrote back to me when I emailed her about the libel laws and Simon Singh. Sounded quite reasonable.

I must harrass her over this too.
