I want my Vista to check for updates when it turns on, it does this. I want it to tell me if there is one, and invite me to download it, and to leave me alone if I say 'not now'. It does this. So why, when I tell it to go ahead and download the update (while I get on with whatever I've turned the computer on for) does it let me say 'not now' to a restart, then after twenty minutes give me a hassle box which at best will only allow me to delay the hassle for a further four hours? Maybe I'm using my computer for eight. Why in the name of all that is holy can't it fuck the fucking fuck off and let me do the update when I want to shut the bastard down?

Oooh, it makes me jolly cross.

Not sure about Vista, but in XP if you go to Start > Run and enter net stop wuauserv it'll close the automatic update service and stop you getting hassled to restart.

It's a sobering reminder of how long you've been on the computer when you're dismissing that stupid fucking message for the fourth time in a day.

"You should really restart, you know. I did the update for you, the least you can do is restart."

"Oh, come on! Restart! You know you want to!"

"Hello? I've fallen over! I'm sad and lonely and cold! Please, if only you'd restart everything would be okay!"

"Restart. restartrestartrestartrestartrestartrestartrestartrestartrestartrestartrestartrestartrestartrestartrestartrestartrestartrestart
restartrestartrestartrestartrestartrestartrestartrestartrestartrestartrestartrestartrestartrestartRESTART!"

"I'm going to kill you if you don't restart. You, your whole family, everyone you've ever met. Restart NOW muthafucka!"

"Fuck it, I'm restarting anyway. Fuck you and the horse you rode in on! I'm a fucking Windows Update - I can do whatever the fuck I like!"

Windows 7 is a lot better in this regard, in fact this computer very rarely bothers me with any kind of message at all. Sadly however 95% of my interactions with PCs are with my work XP machine.
