My ipod is dead. Should I replace with another ipod or get a different kind?

You need a pretty good reason not to choose an iPod these days. Do you have one?

Problem with the ipod touch is it's very expensive and has relatively low amount of storage. I would get one via the ipoints thing but I kind of want one now. I need at least 60Gb of storage space.

Get a phone that can do it and stop carrying two devices around all the time.

A phone isn't going to give me 60Gb storage is it? Anyway I like carrying two devices.

If you're already using iTunes then an iPod is going to be easier I'd have thought.

I think the next iPhone will have a 64Gb model. They've doubled the storage each year. This also means we're due a 128Gb iPod Touch in the autumn.

Iphone is of course very very expensive (at least as far as I'm concerned). And 64GB would be vastly reduced once you start sticking games on there I imagine. Though I don't really know. What's the size of typical iPhone/Pod games?

Fairly small, you'd certainly have enough room for the ones that are actually any good.

Most of them just a few megabytes, most are less than 20-30 meg. There are rare exceptions, Myst and Grand Theft Auto are about a gig each.

Those big ones are ones that I wouldn't want anyway. Still I think I'll probably stick to ipod and phone separate.

Seriously, 60 Gig? You might be best served by a second hand hard disc iPod until the flash sizes on new ones catch up.

A classic 6th or 7th generation.

I went from a 30gig iPod Video to an 8gig iPod Touch. No regrets at all.

Of course I have to be a lot more selective of what goes on now, but one big benefit now is I tend to listen to albums a lot more than I used to by not skipping through loads of stuff I only really half wanted on in the first place.

Also Nirejhenge, you would FUCKING LOVE the pocket synths & sequencers on the iPod Touch, Technobox, Bebot etc.

Thing is I tend to use my ipod a lot for transferring large files so I tend to keep around 10-15 GB spare. I fancy getting a touch eventually so I'll grab a 60gb one soon I think. I'd go for a smaller device if I had time to select what I wanted to be on there but I generally don't (because I forget until the last minute).

I've just bought a 120gb classic from CEX for £95. I figured I can use this in the meantime whilst I try and get a touch via the ipoints thing. :attitude:

I think a USB flash drive would be a far cheaper way of solving that problem :)

edit: but yeah, fair enough choice.

But then I'm carry around even more devices! Clearly that wasn't THE WAY. The small size of the flash drive makes me think I'd probably lose it as well. Last time I had an 80gb ipod I lost it so this one might not last!

Except now you're carrying an iPod lead around, which probably takes more room than the thumbdrive would have!

Ha! No I'm not because I have about 5 ipod cables all at the requisite places for me to use them. My bunch of keys is already huge, I can barely fit them in my pocket as it is!

Also if I use the ipod for storage it means less fiddling about with connecting my ipod for sync then disconnecting that to put the thumb drive in.

I need about 30-40gb for music and the rest I need spare. I bought this ipod believing I can eventually sell it to get my money back and then get an alternative in the meantime.

The iPhone being massively expensive is a big put off for me but I may go for the pen drive and ipod touch option. But I might not. We'll see.

Storage on these is what you make it with SD cards, but the Sandisk Sansa shits all over Apple products for sound quality to my ears. The UI and controls won't suck your dick for you like an iThing will, though.

*boggle*

Door key, car key, locker key, bike lock key.

Surely that's all one would ever need on a keyring?

Really? I thought the 2G and 3G were both 8/16GB.

But yes, more than one device feels archaic these days.

I thought about this a lot when debating how many body parts I would have to sell to be able to afford an iPhone, but it made me really think about how I use my phone and iPod. I use my iPod all of the time. I don't leave home without it. It has loads of audiobooks on it and so I use it when travelling, on my luch break, shopping - whatever. if I am doing some graphics work I use it then. I have a little 'Lego' shaped speaker which I clip onto it so it can play out loud whilst I am cleaning the house or in the bath.

My phone, on the other hand, gets taken around with me only when I know I have to call someone, say to let Craig know what time I will be back. I try not to take it out with me because I do not want to be at everyone's beck and call all hours of every day. When I do take my phone I put it on silent and try to forget about it. I'm not interested in having people able to contact me all of the time. I heard someone say once 'do you remember the days before mobile phones when you actually had to arrange to meet people?'. I do, and I preferred it that way because people had to make blinkin' arrangements, instead of just turning up whenever they fancy. See, I am always prompt and on time, but a lot of people now see their mobile phones as a way of changing their plans on the go - changing MY plans on the go and so it is always me left waiting because I have actually turned up the original time.

Sorry, going O/T a bit, but I have a friend arriving who has managed to arrange to stay, arriving on Friday, now Wednesday evening, now Wednesday Morning, Now Thursday afternoon (perhaps... she'll let us know when she gets here).

That annoys me. I hate mobile phones and the fact that I am expected to carry one, but I love my lovely iPod filled with audiobooks. if anyone dared to interrupt Douglas Adams reading the Hitchhikers' Guide with some inane call about how they are going to spend the entire day messing me around again I would be most displeased.

I certainly prefer to keep my music and phone separate. I picked up a cheap Zen Stone thingy the other week, loaded Death Magnetic on there and that'll do me for my walks into work/town. While I'm out and about, I'll often put my phone on silent anyway as I'd rather just use it for texts.

I'd have an iPhone but to be honest any 'inconvenience' of carrying a phone and and iPod on those occasions where that actually happens is so slight as to be inconsiderable or certainly not considerable enough to be worth what Apple would like me to pay them. It depends on what you do though I guess, I mostly use my iPod either in the car or out running, if I was on buses and trains all the time then I'd probably have an iPhone by now.

I used to just leave my phone in the bottom of my bag... til I got an iPhone. Perfect: listen to music whenever, check my email and Twitter. People rarely actually ring me, so I'm fine with texts. It's well good. And just one device.

If the idea of people ringing you is a pain, you can always stick it in plane mode til you want to be bothered.

I'll probably get an iphone eventually but the lack of storage space is a bit annoying at the minute. If I can get a 60gb iPod touch then that'll do for the time being. Unless the 60gb iphone comes out in a reasonable time.

I use Rockbox on my iriver and Sandisk players.

http://www.rockbox.org/

Plays all of the formats (I like FLAC, myself), absolutely everything is configurable, has useful features manufacturers don't think of (like upside down mode, for when you want the headphone jack to be on the bottom instead of the top), has masses of themes and plugins, and is completely free.
