When I go to a strange restaurant I usually get a steak pie* with tatties, preferably mashed ones. It's a safe option & it's my favourite meal.
*Obviously if they don't have steak pie I go for something else, but it's my first choice.

However, I've noticed the disturbing trend of selling stew with a hat as steak pie is becoming more & more popular. Sometimes the stew's lovely, but the pastry is always rubbish >:(

Can this still be called a pie or are they filthy liars?

In my book, it's not a pie unless the pastry encases the entire contents. A porcelain bowl is not pastry.

I definitely prefer a full casing, like. Hatted stews are oddly annoying and unsatisfying to eat. Even if they're massive and filling.

Sounds like they're fobbing you off with a hot pot to me. A great dish but not a pie by any mark.

Also: Open sandwiches? I'll have my other half of the bread please.

Indeed, what a world we would live in if every chef type agreed.

However a dish of tasty meat sealed with a pastry lid does make a half-decent alternative as you still get the lovely moist puff pastry underside. It's those charlatans that cook the stew & pastry separately that rile me.

This is the sort of out of the pot thinking we need if this country is going to get out of this recession, you know.

I did. Because there is more than one type of pie. A pie with a lid only is a pot pie as it tends to come in a pot.

Read the first post again. Stew with a hat, not lid.

Lid implies that it's sealed & cooked together, whereas in actuality the pastry is cooked separately hence it's a hat sat on top of some stew.

Shepherd's pie has no pastry at all. Also cottage pie, and usually fish pie.

Oh, yes, that can GTFF. That, in my mind, is now a pastry garnish; a decoration not meant for consumption. Not a pie.

I'll probably get ripped to bits for saying this too but pastry = shit. I really, really don't like it. I also don't like butter which may explain it but pastry is just a mouthful of dry cack.

At least with a pot pie you can take the lid off, hand it to some fat friend and eat the nice innards. I'm a pudding man myself (like suet pudding).

Wullie. I know what you mean but a pot pie can come like that or without a top at all.
