My other half loves gory horror films and her birthday is looming so am looking for some DVD recommendations please - just to make it even more difficult the films must have been released in the last five years AND be English language (she hates subtitles and dubbing). I know ....... some people eh? ;)

She loves the Saw films for example. There are others too but titles don't exactly spring to mind.

I eagerly await your replies.

Thanks. :)

First film of the kind is meant to be blood feast back in the 60's its imdb rating is 4.something though.

Saw III is probably the outright goriest of the franchise, although IV and VI are better films. (None of them really make much sense and they just make up back-plot as they go, so it doesn't matter if you've seen any of the others or not.) Has she seen all of them already?

Both Hostels are pretty gruesome, although only the first one really holds together as a film, the second one I found to be genuinely nasty with insufficient pay off at the end.

The original Last House On The Left is dated but still retains its shock and horror value IMO (more so than the remake in fact, but the remake at least won't fall foul of the five year rule!).

If you want a couple of really nasty death scenes then give Chaos a try, but be warned one of them in particular is pretty awful.

House of Wax is watchable, and for a 15 it's fairly intense in places.

Diary Of The Dead, Quarantine, 28 Weeks Later and the Dawn Of The Dead remake are all solid zombie fare. (28 Days Later is better than them all but older than five years now I guess.)

What's with the five year rule anyway?

Get her Embodiment of Evil. Not a fantastic film, but a gory, interesting post-Saw renaissance of the Brazilian Coffin Joe franchise.

And Machine Girl. Complete Japanese madness.

Your problem is limiting yourself to English Language & no dubbing, some of the finest low budget gore (the best kind) is coming from Japan, the guys behind Machine Girl and Tokyo Gore Police are obviously insane.

TOKYO GORE POLICE. Okay it's not really a horror but it does have a lot of gore and is quite good fun.

Horror comedy? What about Braindead and Bad Taste? Films rarely come more gory than that.

Defo House of 1000 Corpses and The Devils Rejects, but as Morte has already said once you watch Jap, you don't go back. Ichi the Killer, Battle Royale etc :luv:

How about stuff like the Evil Dead series? Or any of the big Zombie flicks?

All more than five years old!

I'm a big horror fan but 'mainstream' horror has been pretty shit for a while now in the main, most of the good stuff was done in the 80s and 90s.

I'd avoid Cannibal Holocaust like the plague due to its scenes of actual animal slaughter and torture.

Fulci's Zombi 2 or Zombie Flesheaters as it's called here. Get the US cut as the UK one was butchered by the censors.

The japanese have a lot of fun stuff, but the french are where it's at if you're looking for downright nasty, edge of the seat fare of late. Martyrs and Inside in particular are two of the most gruelling and genuinely quality horror films of recent times. Neither are particularly big on dialogue, so maybe you could slip them in all stealthy like.

Oh, for recent english-language stuff, the Hills Have Eyes remake and 'Imprint' from the Masters of Horror series are both well worth watching, and certainly sufficiently nasty. Cigarette Burns isn't bad either, but not a patch on Carpenter's older stuff.

Agreed. These 2 films are far more intense, gripping & disturbing than anything I've seen from the US, or any other country for that matter in the past few years.
The likes of the Saw & Hostel series pale in comparision.

As already stated, they're not dialogue-heavy, so easy to watch even if you don't normally like subtitles.

If she just likes Gore, then the August Underground trilogy are incredibly grim... I think that the last two, 'Mordum' and something else fall within the five year category, and are easier on the eye than the first fillum (jerky vision ).

Personally, I hate all three but the fx work is astounding.

Bring on the Frenchies!

Apparently these French horror films make the standard USA fare look like Play School.

£22 for four films delivered seems pretty good, and I've never seen Baise Moi hence why it's in there.

By fucking christ Inside is a tough watch.

Just finished it now, makes the worst of anything I've ever seen out of Hollywood look like an episode of Play School.

Gore wise it's not off the scale, but it just does things I've never seen or thought about before, or does the same 'level' of gore in different ways, and takes the mind off into some strange places.

Genuinely had me horrified and near tears towards the end, and I'm a man who's never been pregnant, although I do have a child (I think that's going to be a key point in how hard this film hits).

At least I haven't still got Martyrs, Frontiers and Baise Moi still to come..... Oh shit I have!

Fuck me I just read an overview of that film. I thought watching London to Brighton was hard. I really don't know how you could sit through something like that.

It wasn't comfortable viewing, but it was incredibly compelling, I can't remember the last time I was so keen to see how a film ended, I honestly had no idea where it was going to go.

Strip away the gore and there's still a decent film (i.e. story) there, you could do the whole thing with dialogue and it'd still work, but in this variation it really is like a sledgehammer to the face.

London to Brighton is a fantastic film, the overall 'believability' drops a serious bollock at one point, but other than that it's as good a film as you're likely to see - and if anyone doesn't cry at the end - (as in proper, 'we just told you a really good story' tears, not synthetic Hollywood bollocks) - then they've got a colder heart than mine, and I'm not generally thought of as 'gushy.'

I think British and European films are where it's at, Hollywood is just a nasty reflection of the fucked up piece of shit that is America.

Not particularly gory, and not very scary at all, but I've just watched 'The Frightener's' by Peter Jackson and starring Michael J Fox as Rixondale's Meal & Movie choice, and I proclaim myself most entertained. First twenty minutes are a bit all over the place, but it quickly all comes together most satisfyingly and is quite the entertaining film. Recommended.

I haven't yet and am umming and ahhing over it. A friend from another forum posted this review from Bloody Disgusting, which specialises in talking about horror films apparently:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
DISCLAIMER: I have chosen to give this film 1 Skull. This represents the most difficult decision I have ever made regarding the rating of a film. The reason for this decision is hopefully laid out before you in this review. It is not a reflection on the physical quality of the work contained here or the execution and success of the film based on the Director's intentions. Serbian Film is a polarizing production, one that is in many ways a work of either pure genius or absolute insanity. However as I find the film to personally have no redeeming social or political or artistic value, it is my option that a 5 skull rating just for sheer audacity is both misleading and unfair to you as a viewing audience. Take that as either a recommendation or a damnation, as you will.

Salo, Gummo, Inside, all of these films have one thing in common. I was unprepared for what I saw when I sat down to watch them. I mean, sure, I had an inkling that they were supposed to be "shocking" but no real comprehension of the horrors that would fill my screen with each passing frame. Each film had some buzz for me, I knew of Italian filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini from reading a Kathy Acker book in high school that featured the Director as a character. I knew Gummo was from the writer of Kids and I knew Inside was the second film I was to about watch in the “French New Wave of Horror Cinema”. But the buzz on each film was a low hum and certainly not apocalyptic in scope. No one told me that these films would ruin me or make me physically ill but all three did that at varying intervals in my life. Salo in the early 90’s, Gummo a few years later and Inside just a few short years ago. Still, in the annals of my cinematic experience, none of these films can hold a candle to what I witnessed at the Alamo Drafthouse during the SXSW Film Festival.

Serbian Film arrived with every conceivable warning--unlike that trilogy above. I was told time and again by a trusted source (with a stomach of iron) that this film contained scenes that would…nothing short of rape my soul. Hyperbole that I couldn’t even argue as I sat in stunned silence with 250 other people as the credits closed. It wasn't that I was unprepared for what I had just seen. I was fully prepared. I was over prepared. I was ready to have my soul raped. I had no faith in humanity to question. I’ve seen everything. I’ve seen internet porno that would make you run to a monastery. I’ve laughed at the August Underground and Guinea Pig films. I’ve sat behind the lens on film sets and watched every manner of chunk blowing effects shot executed 50 feet from my face. I've seen people die in documentaries jumping off the Golden State Bridge, I've seen PeTA videos, I sat with you all on September 11th and cried as the towers came tumbling down. Nothing was going to faze me. I was wrong.

I can’t bring myself to utter the two-word phrase joyously shouted with mad delight by the crazed film producer at the center of this story. I can't unsee what I saw. I can't close my eyes and not go on the journey of Milos (Srdjan Todorovic)--a former porn star with a beautiful wife and young son who is lured back into the world of adult films by a former co-star and a visionary director who promises a great deal of money to make the ultimate art house porno film. Not knowing what the film is about, Milos agrees--against his seeming better judgment--to pursue the project for the hope that the funds will free him and his family from their drab existence in Serbia. But what kind of movie is Vukmir making, why and for whom? These are the questions Milos asks and these are the answers that you don’t want to know.

Serbian Film is not a “War Movie” however it is a battle and it’s stained with the blood of tens of thousands. The film from director Srdjan Spasojevic is ostensibly a reactionary piece. Built out of a film industry that is just suffering the pangs of birth and freedom only a decade or so after the war ravaged country reemerged from the former Yugoslavia and only 4 years after gaining its independence from Montenegro.

Born of nearly 20 years of conflict, genocide and a systematic military campaign of rape as a tactical weapon. Serbian Film follows French cinema pioneers Gaspar Noe (Irreversible) and Virginie Despentes (Baise-moi) in destroying the status quo regarding on screen violence and sexuality. It is as much a revelation as to the power of image as it is a repulsion to all be the most depraved viewer. Is it designed to make you sick. Is it designed to make you wish you were never born with the blessing of sight and the beauty of a moral compass. Is it a powerful film conceived in a place that saw the absolute worst of what humanity is capable. If you can’t imagine what is like to sit though this movie, how can you ever imagine or empathize, understand or respect what the Serbian, Albanian, Croatian and other former residents of Yugoslavia endured for almost 15-years. But does that make it a good movie?

In many ways Serbian Film is like going to war. Its purpose is to shock you and it does so with impunity. I can’t imagine the horrors that the people of Serbia endured not so long ago. I can’t relate to the character of Milos. I can’t in even my most evil and vile dreams conceive of what he experiences over the course of the movie. I don’t identify with that, and for that I am eternally grateful. However, if going on this journey is enough to make anyone understand the metaphor than perhaps the film is a success and in that success the world would never go to war again.

To describe the horrors in this film to a niche movie-going public that will either embrace the film's extremity (or run screaming to the nearest cliff and hurl their bodies off it in protest) is futile. If what I have written here is enough to turn your feelings of wonder into a burning desire to watch this monstrosity, then perhaps I haven't been clear enough. You don't want to see Serbian Film. You just think you do. You've been far too desensitized. You've laughed at people that fainted in theaters, snickered at legends of grown men and women who walked out of movie premieres and puked on lobby floors. You think you've seen it all and after this, you'll wish you had.

In the end, maybe Serbian Film is just another exploitation film. Just the twisted ravings of a lunatic mind, just another P.T. Barnum, button-pushing product that can famously tote that cinema labs in Hungary and Germany refused to even print the film due to content issues. Perhaps it is an allegory for what the Bosnian War mean to generations of people. Perhaps it's a cold hard look into a desensitized world where video games morals have turned 10-year-olds into rapists and murders? Perhaps, in some ways it’s all those things. But, the one thing it is not, is entertainment.
Score: 2 / 10

So hard not to be intrigued.

(Miner spoilers included.)

A Serbian Film has had 49 individual cuts made to it, totalling nearly four minutes in length, and this is from the BBFC that pass uncut the likes of Martyrs, Inside, Switchblade Romance, Hostel 1/2, all the SAWs and so on.

http://www.melonfarmers.co.uk/bw10c.htm ... ansed_2746

As such, to watch it properly you're going to have to grab the screener that's doing the rounds at the moment.

I'd recommend you ignore completely the press around this film (and read as little about it as possible in fact), and judge for yourself. (The day The Sun sees fit to pontificate morality to me is the day I hang up my right to a functioning mind - http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sh ... ondon.html )

It's a quite remarkable film, I've never seen anything even remotely like it, (that's not to say such a film doesn't exist, I've just never seen it before), and I think that whilst it does scream from the country of its origin, it could, equally accurately, be titled 'A Human Film' - since Serbia and its recent history are very much a reality of times we've all lived through. (Albeit in our cases of course, rather fortunately separated from it.)

Do be advised that it's a tough watch, the last thirty minutes in particular are almost unbearably brutal, and whilst some critics complain that the newborn baby raping scene 'isn't very realistic' you have to wonder who on earth would want it to be?

It's not overly long at 1h40m, it's far better acted, scripted, and coherent than most of the utter fucking shite that comes out of the mainstream film industry these days, and it's really quite terrifying, because it's painfully close to actually being real.

Highly recommended, but a mark out of 10 isn't appropriate.

I kind of kept my cool through most of this film, but the very last shot was too much, I'd be lying if I didn't admit to crying a bit at it, and not the nice 'ET' sort of crying either.
