I nominate, er, me.

But be warned, people saying "yes" now is different from them playing. If I take the number of people who nominate games for the 8 Bit Challenge, only half of them will play on a good week.

Nickachu, MAME is an arcade emulator that will run on pretty much any Mac or PC

Count me in , and as per the other thread I'm glad to help out in any way I can

I'll nominate "Hyper Sports" as my choice :-)

Nick i'm sure you can run MAME on your machine although the older / less powerful it is the harder it'll be to get it going , and you may need to 'work at it' to get some things running but it *will* work if you can stick with it

If you've never tried MAME heres a very quickly knocked together set of instructions (spoilered for size)

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Heres some basics on running MAME on a PC (note you can run mame on just about anything - it will run on PC / Mac / Unix / a hacked PSP / or lots of other mobile devices - I have a Dingoo A320 which runs mame reasonably well and can be carried around in my pocket).

Download MAMEUI from the download link here :

http://www.vg-network.com/mameui-32bitu/

Once downloaded run the file and give it a valid directory to place the files into (c:\ would be fine it creates a subdirectory called MAMEUI32 wherever you extract it to)

Grab the ROMS from a game - officially you should own the arcade cabinet and use a rom reader to get them but .... heres Grim...'s nomination

http://www.romnation.net/srv/roms/23560 ... aster.html

Click on 'download this rom' and when it asks where you want to save it drop it into the 'ROMS' folder under MAMEUI32

Go into the MAMEUI32 folder and double click on MAMEUI32.exe

You'll get a screen like this

Image

There are a couple of ways to do the next bit my suggestion is go just scroll down the central window (the main part is in alphabetical order) until you find Kung-Fu Master and double click it
You get a loading screen , then a message about pressing 'ok' (type 'ok' on the keyboard) and the game will start up.

You might get garbage on the screen for a few seconds (which is what would actually be shown on the real arcade machine when you turned it on) then the machine will start the attract mode.

To play press 5 to insert a coin , 1 for 1 player start and the arrows + ctrl/alt are your two buttons
You can define these by pressing <tab> and setting the keys you want or you can define your joystick
To grab a screenshot at any point press F12 (screenshots are dropped into the 'snap' folder) and to exit press escape

I did a MAME tournoi with a mate and KFM came up. I romped through the first level and eventually came a cropper on the midget bit of level 2. I then failed with my remaining lives to beat the level (cos I suck at KFM - even though I love it).

My mate died three times on the first boss and beat my score by virtue of the first level being more points heavy.

ARGH.

I should pick Contra given that I maxed it on XBLA but I'll go the spiffy-but-ancient platformer Bongo.

I played THE ARSE off of it at Insert Coin 09. And then got banned from there for calling the organiser a cunt.

Lolz.

Meh. OK then. But if Mame requires more than double clicking on it and then choosing the game from a list, I'm definitely out.

Kungfu Master was the 2nd arcade game i owned (i had a wonderboy Jamma cap and bought KFM as a board to swap)

I can get to the end boss but have never beaten him (i got killed by him the last time we played it in the Retro League :

http://s11.zetaboards.com/RetroLeague/s ... 8&t=474734

And as i reminded myself reading that thread i loved the fact on the C64 one for the first level you could pull out a gun and shoot the baddies :-)

One of the advantages of these type of things are those old games which you've never heard of which come up - this season we played a weird shootemup which was quite fun with magic dragons called "Cyvern"

I don't think so, but I suppose we could just play with the game people have already submitted to keep it shorter maybe?

A quick question on the titles as i cant see who nominated it but i assume they wanted Sega's "Congo Bongo" -

And not Jetsoft's Bongo :

I'm happy with either but Bongo is a significantly harder game

** Edit actually found it was Blucey and since the screeny i grabbed was off his site he probably wants the tough one - they had it in my local arcade for a few months but that was the only place I ever saw that or Dazzler / Cavelon / Excaliba (other Jetsoft games)

That was Bluceys choice.

aye, just Bongo no Congo.

It's not the best game ever and it's a bit bollocksly hard in places but when I was wee I'd go into my local sweetshop and get a few games on it, a slush puppy and the latest issue of 'Scream!' - halycon days... *weep*.

I'd echo its a bit bollocksly hard , i remember the uproar over how many 10ps it used to take to get through about 3 screens or so on it , but its a solid game - the only other oddity i remember about it is that i think MAME only gives you two lives (the one in my local arcade gave 3) , although i havent played it in quite a while

If the running of these games is as easy as Zaphod has made it sound then I'll play. When I run MAME are all these games automatically in there?
