We chattered about this in BnB but it doesn't have a thread yet. And it needs one, because that demo is enormous fun! I flew a plane and bombed some fuel things and stuff blew up. I jumped down a hill and fluffed the controls and tumbled and rolled for miles and miles down a steep hill. I was chased up a hill by men in jeeps whilst I was on a moped; I jumped from the moped to the jeep, headbutted the driver, and took his car.

Woo! This is on my buy list.

Shit voice acting though.

I played the demo and it didn't click, but I didn't do half the stuff you listed. Maybe I'll try it again.

This sounds like Mercs 2.

Is it Mercs 2?

The first one was quite a bit like Mercs 2. I hope this one is like Mercs 2 only better. Mercs 2.

Mercs 2 was, and is, awesome. I for one welcome any game that reprises its awesomeitude.

Why are people only just noticing this - the gameplay videos on marketplace for the last six months have looked awesome. AWESOME I tell ya - I also pointed this out repeatedly to DoccyG.

To be fair, I loved the openness and premise of Mercs 2, just the controls were unbelievably shit and inconsistent and a massive barrier to any potential enjoyment.

Just Cause 2 doesn't seem to suffer the same horrendous flaw, so it's already a million times better. But like I said to Gaywood, I didn't even do half the stuff he did, instead choosing to wander around aimlessly, falling off cliffs and wondering exactly what I was supposed to be doing in the settlements. I will give it another go.

I guess you could fire up Civ 4 and just make your settlers walk around the map until they die.

I played the demo of this yesterday and I am of the opinion that it's a lot of silly fun.

I said it in bits n bobs but I'll say it here too. After playing the demo I'm looking forward to this game far more than the rather gloomy looking Crackdown 2.

Did you like the controls? :S

All the vehicles had different, non-standardised controls; the tanks being a particular pain from what I remember, having to juggle movement and turret. And then the handling of each vehicle was either overly sensitive or like running through a swamp.

It was all a complete barrier for me. Controls should stay out of the way; I shouldn't have to retrain my mind to use them.

This is true, but then it's also true of almost all games that let you drive various types of vehicles - the Battlefield series does it, from memory, as does Red Faction: Guerrilla, as does The Saboteur. It can be a little bit irritating, but then how else do you model a wheel and pedals onto the same set of controls as two sets of tracks and an independently rotating turret?

I've never had a problem with your turret dictating your turning in games with tanks. It reduces your freedom a bit, sure, but it massively reduces the awkwardness and complexity.

If you can't make the controls work and feel intuitive for a vehicle, you haven't designed your game properly and you shouldn't have included the vehicle at all.

Either that or a nice, simple to-do list.

I never did get round to finishing the first Just Cause, despite enjoying it far more than other sandbox games. I might have to download the demo for the sequel now that I've actually got the hard drive space.

Indeed. I spend a great deal of time trying to come up with those types of retorts.

Any way back to the game. This is how you do a demo. It's bloody great. Definitely going to buy this. The levels are enormous and beautiful, the fun looks like it could be never ending. Big bangs and ridiculous leaping around like a bellend. I love. :luv:

Mercs was good for about one third of the map. Just Cause was just byowtiphul.

Didn't Mercs 2 get slagged off on here when it first came out? I seem to remember it being full of bugs - was that all fixed with updates?

Not all fixed, no. They fixed a few, most notably the one where the Australian bird wouldn't shut up through the entire game about going to visit her for missions.

No. Mypsy donkey wailed about it being full of bugs, even though he never played it. There were a few issues in there, one particularly annoying one being everyone deciding not to bother shooting at you anymore, but there was nothing game-breaking.

Should just add... Anywhere you can see you can go. So far I spent about 25 mins heading in one direction (all the way down the cliffs & shit) and never got to a point where it said I couldn't continue. I actually found that a bit hard to believe at first but you can actually run down that actual mountain like a complete loon.

Amazing.

The IGN preview said it's about 1000 square kilometres, every square inch of which you can get to. Which is pretty awesome.
