What do you get when you combine a mobile phone, a camera, a little projector, some markers on your finger tips and a mirror? The god-dam Minority Report future is what. And it's called SixthSense.

http://www.ted.com/talks/view/id/685

It's a 13 min video but you can skip to the 4 minute mark, but it's well worth watching.

Basically it's a system where information is projected onto any surface, and surfaces can be read from for information. Nothing new technology wise, but it's the merging together which is the impressive part. At the moment it uses off the shelf components which they said cost around $350 and they plan to make it open source. Really just watch the video and see the possibilities.

It makes me happy that they are people working on this sort of stuff. :luv:

Why have I only just seen this?

Because you don't pay my twitter feed enough attention? :p

This stuff is amazing. I also love that because it's an audience that has done a lot of research between them they go mad for the PhD student. Good, good stuff.

Pretty sure there was a thread on here when that video first got released too.

It's nifty, but kind of impractical.

Yeah, I posted a thread on it a year or so ago. It's impressive stuff, but I'd like to see how well it worked "in the wild". I suspect you'd get a pretty poor recognition rate.

Hmm, some of that stuff seemed a bit 'concept art' for my liking. I'm not sure where he's at he could have actually done as clear and 'locked' projections such as the Obama-paper moment. However, it has been the long and glorious tradition of invention to bullshit to get funding and his ideas are exciting and plausible. Here's hoping he and others can take them somewhere.

Only they should be banned from public transport, library spaces and coffee shops naturally. Mobiles are bad enough.
