They should close down Radio 1 and move 6 Music onto FM. The savings would be huge and Chris Moyles would dwindle into obscurity where he belongs.

Fuck me, you could write the "National Petition to Save BBC 6 Music from Us, the Listeners" on a piece of A5 in a 32 point font

Ah, but, if it was on FM, it'd be wildly popular, innit.

Hang on theres much more to this than closing down 6 music - on first reading it sounds stupid ?

They are closing down a few radio stations , cutting their website back , cutting back on buying foregin shows , cutting back on bidding for sports events and cutting back on their youth productions

I love this quote

Quote:
"He will also pledge to close BBC Switch and Blast!, leaving the lucrative teenage market to ITV and Channel 4."

So while as far as i can tell the Beeb *do* actually produce and fund youth and teen shows and the other channels just buy in american stuff they are going to pull out and expect the other channels to actually start investing in it ?

It really sounds like they have decided the Tories are going to win the next election and rip into the Beeb so they are going to do it first - ha ha - i'll tear it all down before you get the chance to

And their own website says they are silient on the rumors :

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8538130.stm

Quote:
BBC silent over downsizing claims

The BBC has refused to comment on reports it is to close two radio stations and scale back its web presence to make £600m in savings.

BBC Asian Network and 6 Music will be closed under the proposals, according to a report in The Times.

The Times claims the measures are part of a plan, due to be made public next month, to reduce the BBC's services and focus on quality over quantity.

A spokeswoman for the corporation said she would not comment on "speculation".

The Times claims the report is currently being considered by the BBC Trust, the corporation's governing body.

It allegedly involves a wide-ranging series of cuts that will make £600m available for higher quality programming.

Savings will reportedly be made by limiting spending on rights to sporting events and reducing the money spent on imported TV shows.

The BBC Switch and Blast! websites are also to be closed as part of a larger reduction in the BBC's web presence, the newspaper alleges.

The claims follow a National Audit Office report criticising the corporation over its programme of major new building works.

The "wide-ranging strategic review" at the centre of the Times claims has reportedly been drawn up by John Tate, the BBC's director of policy and strategy.

The Times claims it is an attempt to forestall Conservative plans to scale back BBC operations should they win the general election.

It says the BBC's budget for foreign acquisitions, which currently stands at £100m, will be cut by a quarter.

This could mean the end of such US TV shows as Heroes, Mad Men and The Wire on BBC channels.

The BBC's website budget, which currently stands at £112m, will also be cut by 25 per cent.

The Times says this will be achieved by halving the number of web pages and reducing its staff by a quarter.

BBC Worldwide will be ordered to divest itself of its British magazine publishing arm, the newspaper continues.

If approved, this could see the Radio Times, Top Gear magazine and other publications put out to tender.

I drove into work for the first time in ages. In the 45 minutes I was in the car, Chris Moyles played one, maybe two songs and threaded 'comedy' Dave's eyebrows.

Licence fee is really smoking there.

I find it surprising that they are seriously considering scrapping 6 music and Asian Network, on the basis of commercial competition, when these are the two radio stations with no viable commercial alternative.

And XFM doesn't count.

There are plenty of Asian-based radio stations. I've not listened to 6 music so I can't comment on that. I always assumed it was like Heart.

It really doesn't make sense keeping the only part of the BBC that is in the same style as its commercial rivals and is therefore full of absolutely terrible programming.

While I don't listen to 6 Music and therefore have no real opinion of it, I do think the BBC has spread themselves too thin over the past five or so years.

I'm just trying to be more racially diverse in my argument. To be honest, any asian radio station that I can pick up in my flat sounds like a pirate station.

Speaking as someone who listens to XFM all the time on my commute, being as it's the closest thing I can find that plays the kind of music I like, am I missing out on something with 6 Music then? Is it actually, you know, good?

I've never listened to the morning slot slot apart from Adam & Joe on a Saturday but it certainly has some good shows on it at other times.

It is XFM with less cunt. To be honest, it is largely an old boys' network for weekday evening Radio 1 DJs from the 90s.

You have to realise these facts:

1 - The Tories will win the next election.

2 - Their culture man is a total fucking prick cunt called Jeremy Hunt. One of the slimiest individuals I've ever met*, he's the bitch of the big media companies. When he gets in the BBC's life will become very difficult indeed.

3 - As such the BBC need to pre-empt him by chopping out the dead wood. Asian network has consistently underperformed and 6 Music is very expensive to run for such a low audience. If they don't there will be bigger cuts further down the line that won't be of the BBC's choosing.

4 - If you care, write nice letters to Jeremy Hunt. Seriously.

Certainly with Asian network, there is competition in the form of Sunrise Radio.

I'm worried about the future of the BBC as much as Chinny. A lot of us in Britain don't appreciate the BBC enough; take a look at the German equivalent, for example, it's like ITV, downmarket post-1993 ITV. But with more US imports (dubbed into German) and barely anything new, other than remakes of British television show formats. (Yes, they have TV licences in other countries. It helps pay for the transmitter network, otherwise you go down the American route of having huge advert breaks everywhere. The German TV licence is even more expensive than the UK one, and you have to buy it if you have a car radio or computer even if you don't own a TV!)

I've only ever listened to anything on it on podcast, like a&j and c&h. And I'm definitely not listening for the music. Ditch the 'station', keep the programmes. DAB can fuck off.

6 Music does have George Lamb, so it's (almost) worth the collateral damage to get rid of him.

This was my first thought as well. What's going to happen to Radio 7 then? Does it immediately get changed to BBC 6 Talking?

Let worry turn to panic, this was tweeted by Jon Ronson

Quote:
A friend was talking to a high-ranking Tory about the BBC. She gave him an enigmatic look and said, "You just leave the BBC to us!"

Want to know how good the BBC is? Just go abroard, or ask some foreigners about what they listen to, chances are they'll say they listen to the BBC online or the World Service, watch BBC News and download BBC programmes...and then whinge about not being able to use the iPlayer.

Making television and radio programmes is horrifically expensive, though. I think in comparison with European alternatives, we are very spoilt with the BBC in terms of cost to what we actually receive.

My only really big criticism of the BBC (bar the obvious unease at how much some of the biggest 'talent' is paid) is the extreme tabloidisation of the BBC television news. It's most depressing if you ever hear the news bulletins on Radio 4 and compare the two.

FTFY

This is exactly the scenario they are trying to pre-empt. By streamlining a bit in advance, it takes some of the wind out of the sails of Tory hatchet jobs.
Axing a radio station purely for Asians is genius, it's sure to placate the Daily Massive for a little while.

Now if they could drop DAB and do something more sensible with the license fee, I think they'll be pretty much Tory proof. If not, I shudder to think.

For the sheer variety on Radio 4 - and the proportion of quality on there - that looks relatively cheap. Cheaper than BBC3, which is only on from 7 in the evening, and half as much again as BBC4, which has similar hours. The list of good stuff on Radio 4 goes on and on, most of it not even half an hour in length. My Ipod's full* of R4 podcasts.

*not full, but still

That Guardian pictothingy supports this statement. However, it is a cost per channel thing, which is somewhat misleading.

Speaking as someone who listens to XFM all the time on my commute, being as it's the closest thing I can find that plays the kind of music I like, am I missing out on something with 6 Music then? Is it actually, you know, good?

If you like XFM youd like 6 music

Im happy to have been played on both and it is indeed a shame that 6 music has been fucked off :(
Huw Stevens FTW.

The problem with 6 music is that it doesn't have much business being a radio station.
I mean, some of the programmes are fine, but it has music-specific news and weather breaks, FFS. Un-necessary, Unlistenable and Untenable.

Radio 1 is bad enough for that kind of thing, and there is such a thing as over specialisation. I assume they've realised this.

That said, I will be sorry to see it go as presumably it does mean the end of the road for some shows / presenters on the BBC.

I just wish they'd have kept that content in the existing proper stations in the first place rather than spreading everything thinner and thinner with all these stupid channels that nobody listens to or can receive even if they want to.

Going back to the costs per station thing, is there a list of listener figures so I can work out the cost per listener?

Also: How do they work out how many people are listening to / watching a particular radio / tv station?

I think they used to install 'techno gubbins' in folks houses to get an estimate of what the UK trends were, I guess now they have iPlayer to help with tracking.

Chinny will tell you.
