I searched for a thread for this, assuming there must already be one, but I couldn't find one.

Anyway, so who's been watching this? I've grabbed bits here and there as it's been on, and I find it all quite exciting, especially the ski jumping and things like that. Oh, and the curling.

We've got a thread about the less-than-excellent Luge dude, somewhere.

Yeah fair enough, though I felt a bit thingy posting in there.

Agree with Mali on the ski cross - just totally manic, that.

Doesn't matter, topics are free, etc.

I'm not a fan of the Olympics, winter or otherwise. I'm not convinced they are good for the cities they are in, or the people that are in them.
But I'll start another thread if I want to debate that ;)

I saw some of the downhill luge/skeleton stuff. Have they done the bob sleigh?

Oh I saw some of the two man bob the other night at Angelas flat in London. It led to my rather excellent joke when they said 6 bobs had crashed so far and I turned to Jen and said all the Toms and Freds were fine :D
My jokes suck eh?

Seems the bobsleigh is at 1am our time. Well the women's anyway. I won't pretend to be any sort of expert, but it says they're the World Champions already, and stand a good chance of Gold this time.

This would make an interesting debate, though, and I largely share your views on this.

I enjoy the Winter Olympics far more than the normal one's. They are faster and with less people throwing stupid objects far.

Also Amy Williams is pretty easy on the eyes and has a gold which was awesome to watch.

Meeeeee, in places, because my girlfriend has an interest in the rough area, being a Germanic type person. Must say, the witner games I find much more thrilling than the summer games (as someone who watches sport on TV only a handful of occasions each decade), because everything in the winter game looks so dangerous. Bar a few exceptions, virtually everything is thrilling and death-defying and has competitors that display almost superhuman skills. Top stuff.

Me, given that I've watched Ice Hockey for twenty years now. About the only one I don't bother with is curling, but even now it appears many female curlers appear to be supermodels.

Canada vs Russia in the mens hockey is on live in about an hour. Winner stays in, loser goes home. And considering this was predicted to be the final, and are captained by two players are a) the two best in the world and b) don't like each other very much, I think it might be a classic.

Yeah, heard about that. Bit of a screwup, especially to cost himself a gold medal - and he had been an arse to the journalists so I bet they were very happy to put the boot in.

I have mostly enjoyed the Mens Figure Skating.

I have always had a hard time deciding if I like Brian Joubert or Stéphane Lambiel the most, but Lambiel's routine was so beautiful that I cried. I wish I had seen Joubert's routine properly, but he was reportedly suffering some personal problems and though was expected to finish top three, came on to the ice obviously dstressed, talking t himself, and crashed out in every way. He came about 18th, I think.

It's a shame, but Lambiel was stunning.

(this guy)

Anyway... this lead on to a fun video I posted on twitter a few days ago. Evgeny Plushenko always seems like a humourless and robotic skater when I have seen him skate in various championships, but the other day I found this video, which is rather ace and made me see him in a whole new way.

I tried to find Lambiel's performance at the Winter Olympics (in the Short Program) but couldn't find it :(

Am I the only one who thinks that Hazel Irvine is getting saucier looking as the games go on?

Anyone?

I like that "hup hup hup" noise that everyone makes during the skiing, as well as those cow bells they ring. I think we should move this form of encouragement onto other sports, such as F1 racing, or maybe snooker.

I implore you that if you are close to a TV turn it to BBC2 or Eurosport and watch the final period of the ice hockey. It looked like Canada would run away with it but the other colony has pulled a goal back and are looking pretty fired up. Also it seems it might royally kick off at some point.

Thunder Bay is like a ghost-town right now.
All the men are inside watching the "hah-kee", while the wumminfolk are stuck in the kitchen making, erm, beaver tails and moose burgers. Or something.

Thank GOD the yanks lost the hockey. As if it wasn't bad enough seeing yanks brag feverishly all day about how they are the best at everything on Facebook... I think I would have lost the will to live had they taken the hockey too.

There's only so many times you can say "but you can't win wars" before it gets old.

Funnily enough I thought it was a comparatively dull game - certainly lacking something, though I suspect the commentary Bob Ballard and Brent Pope had something to do with it. Until the last ten minutes of the third and OT, which was hugely entertaining.
