Hopefully, Mimi can't see this thread.

So, anyway, Mimi is having a bad time at the moment:

Quote:
My nan has only one working arm (her left arm has been paralysed since she was three years old) and she has just today come out of hospital after having a fall on Boxing Day (slipped on ice outside uncle's house because he didn't want to help an 89 year old woman to the cab across the icy pavement because it was 'a bit cold' -sorry... gnnnghhhh, I have just had him scream blue murder at me because he wanted my nan to go into a home and thinks I encourage her independence... gnnghhh... must... not... keep... going... on...) and breaking her other arm. Anyway, she has been talking a lot about brain training, which she tried from one of the other patients after being told that it could help keep her mental faculties in good shape (whether this is bunk or not doesn't bother me - I just think it will be good for her to have something to do in spare moments), and I thought that the larger fat DS might be a bit easier for her to balance and get a hold of, but then of course I think the screen of the DS Lite would make it easier for her to see.

In the ideal world I'd get her one of those new 'Old Folks' DSi's, but I can't afford anything like that at the moment, so that would have to be something I looked at in a few months if she enjoyed this one and made good use of it and things improved.

Donations for a DSi XL for Granny Meems can be sent to me at the Server Donation page - just say that you want to donate in this thread (or PM) so I'll know it's for that and not the actual servers.

I'm in for £20 so we've got £130 to go.

[edit]We're done. Thanks all.

I was actually going to suggest this. Hi5, Grim...

I can't afford much, but I'll chuck some in for her. Mimi, and any extension of her loved family, mean a lot to us.

Excellently, we already have enough for a second hand DS Lite. I'll post as soon as I can when we hit our target, but if we go over it can be games, or something (or I can refund if preferred).
This has actually made me a little emotional :)

Put me down for a tenner!

Everyone was more than generous with my sponsorship a while ago, it's the least I can do.

*Edit* I'll do the actual donation when I get home. The page is blocked at work...

In 15 minutes enough for a DS Lite and Brain Training.
In 22 minutes we had all the money we needed (I just couldn't keep up with the PMs and Notification emails)

This is a good day :)

Wow, my average time to check a thread is now longer than the time it takes to raise money for this.

It is yes. It's marvellous really. Really restores one's faith in humanity.

Sadly I don't have any cash at the mo (things have been super bad lately) but it was really warming to see the response to this thread.

It was all done in the time it took me to chop some onions mushrooms and peppers (for dinner tonight) and watch the best bit of bargain hunt (the auction at the end. I love my PVR).

Pretty amazing.

Guys, I just got a message on twitter to tell me to come here, and I read this a few minutes ago, but I am a bit shaken now (in a good way, but my adrenaline has all rushed a bit, and then I thought I should tell me nan, and then she was all 'how?!', and then she got all upset (again, in a nice way)

I... don't really know what to say.

Then she said how could she say thankyou, so I said I would take her picture:

She said she looks terrible, so I can't post this, but i will:
Image

She looks a tad confused by the whole situation, I know.

I really don't quite know what to say, but everything has suddenly rushed at me, and I feel quite overwhelmed with gratitude and disbelief.

Sorry, i feel like a bit of a clod because I don't know what to say but thankyou from the bottom of my heart, and this has touched me more than you could know.

OK, I will do that now.

Thanks again guys. I just went down to check on Nan. She was genuinely amazed and taken aback at what she called the kindness of strangers, like something from an old Tenessee Williams play. She couldn't quite believe it, so I showed her his thread. She said she has something to look forward to. She has, as you probably realise, had a bit of a time of it recently, and has been quite depressed in the hospital and in care. I've been hoping to get her out and about for the couple of weeks I am here to care for her, to help get a bit of enjoyment back into her life, and now she's all overwhelmed about the kindness of people and being able to carry on her brain training.

Thanks so much to you all, to everyone who helped and everyone who couldn't but gave kind wishes and thoughts.

M x
