More Civ is a good thing.

More Alpha Centauri would be a better thing.

Did I spy hexes? I wonder what they're going to put in to make it significantly different to Civ IV with BTS.

That's a good point - I lost my copy of Civ 4 so now's a perfect opportunity to buy the Complete Civ 4 box for £7 from Amazon, as I never played the expansions.

How do you use the numberpad to move units if it becomes hexes?

Well the number of squares you can move to goes from 8 to 6, so I'm going to answer "non-intuitively".

1,4,7,3,6 and 9 seems sensible.

Not that I use the numpad with civ4.

You have a clear left and right, s0 4 and 6. then the rest are diagonals. Unless the camera is rotatable, in which case use of the pad would be impractical anyway.

Why not use malleable circular shapes that increase or decrease in size varying on the influence of the surrounding landscape, cities, empires and units poisitioned in said squares?

The same way you do in every other hex based game? You have 8 buttons but 6 directions. Just make the 8 and 2 keys not work.

I just realised something...

I played hundreds of hours of Civ 1 on the Amiga, whilst I was at Primary school.
I played a similar amount of Civ 2 whilst at High School.*
I played a lot of Civ 3 whilst at College.
I played a lot Civ 4 whilst at Uni.
And I'll probably play Civ 5 a bit in this post-degree, working life.
In almost all cases there's no overlap. One period for each game.

I wonder what era Civ 6 will usher in for me, or if I'll play it at all :o
Infact, I'd better be doing something different by the time Civ 6 rolls around, or I'll have ruined this little life-symmetry that I have going on.

*It got replaced by SMAC when that rolled around, but I think I'd stopped playing it by the time I got to College. I was playing too many HL mods :)

Demo today. At some point.

The only thing that has stopped pre ordering has been concerns about PC specs. This should answer them. Hopefully.

Specs:

Quote:
OS: Windows XP SP3/ Windows Vista SP2/ Windows 7
CPU: Dual Core CPU
RAM: 2GB RAM
HDD: 8 GB
DVD-ROM Drive: Required for disc-based installation
Video: 256 MB ATI HD2600 XT or better, 256 MB nVidia 7900 GS or better, or Core i3 or better integrated graphics

Seems pretty low, to be honest, especially that graphics requirement.

It's only the graphics I'm worried about - everything else easily meets the recommended specs. The site which you can use to check you can run it says it's fine, but I believe the chipset in my laptop (Radeon 5470 512Mb Dedicated) is supposedly under the minimum

The desktop exceeds the rec. specs, but my main play of Civ4 tends to be co-op games, while downstairs and so not on the desktop, so I'd be disappointed if the laptop couldn't run it.

Still, downloading the demo anyway.

I am liking Demo. Of the three, the egyptians do seem to be the one to go for in the demo. The cheapness of important wonders like the great library, and The ability to build plenty of war chariots with no horses, followed by then building lots of horsemen (and then backing up with catapults when available) has allowed me to manage to kill of two civs before the 100 turns is up.

Third probably would've fell too, had it not been for the "Ahh, you're building up an army on my borders", "Yes, I am, for I am declaring WAR!", "Ok, then while you're not expecting an attack, I will kill your chariots. Ahhhhhhh" problem I had at the end.

There's a preorder bonus, I think - extra maps or something.

Aye.

Given I've always gone for the generated maps, it's not that much of a bonus for me.

The deluxe version on steam with an extra civ (Babylon), on the other hand...

What's the point in that? I always play random generated.

Ding.

I very occasionally played on the earth maps, mind. Quite a different game though.

Dong.

I think I played Earth exclusively on Civ1 on the Amiga. Just because starting as the Zulu nation meant you had quite a long time to prepare and advance before first contact. Which was normally Egypt or Babylon.
