The EOS 1000D is supposed to be very nice, although (as usual) the kit lens is crap. Can you get a decent body-only deal?

Also, GTFF! I resurrected this thread, you fucker!

You can save about £40 on the body only. What lens would you recommend then? That's £40? ;)

I'm looking at getting an entry level DSLR still, currently considering either a

Nikon D3000 with 18-55mm VR Lens for £379

or a

Canon EOS 1000D + 18-55mm Kit for £399

Jessops are doing 6mths interest free on them.

I know D40s have been recommended but I like buying new tbh.

Hayalp Hayalp!

Out of all those I think probably a PS3 would be the best one for you.

Slightly cheaper here:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002J9GIAQ

I'm still unsure about whether I'd end up having an SLR with me often enough to use it properly, I want really nice pictures of places I've been rather than I want to go somewhere just to take pictures. I'm not sure I'd be wanting to carry it up mountains and stuff or whether I'd be better off just buying a better compact, but then again the compact I already have is pretty reasonable. I JUST DON'T KNOW.

When Jen bought me mine last month she was going to get me the 1000D I think. The only thing that stopped her was that she knew I wanted to experiment with low light and I read that the 500D was great. I don't know how much more than your budget it cost though.
It came bundled with the standard lense and I'd like to buy a new one at some point but just with this standard one my pictures already look a million times better than they did from a standard camera. Don't stress about getting a different lense, leave that til you can afford it. I'm guessing it'll be a year or two before I splash out on a better lense.

Markg, as I think I said in this thread I was vaguely disappointed with the SLR for that reason.

Unless you like specifically looking for places to take photos and don't mind dragging the kit around with you, it'll end up being used very infrequently.
It's either a professional tool or something you need to devote quite a lot of time and money to make it a satisfying hobby.

The cost of lenses is also a bit of a put-off, as is finding you've got dirt / moisture / fungus growing in one of them yet again, and the repair cost is more than a decent compact :S

You may drink your weak lemon drink now.

Mmm - if it's just that, then ignore me. That lens is well worth £40.

We have got an EOS 400D, along with 3 friends. Another has the 1000D, and gets some very nice pictures with it. I'm not sure of the exact difference between them, but they are both very nice.

Another friend has an entry level nikon, not sure the model number. Again it takes nice pictures and they are pleased with it, but it feels a bit too light and flimsy compared to our Canons - and I found changing the settings around a bit more cumbersome (could just be because I am used to our camera, mind).

Nice.

Also getting another, better, lens is awesome. The kit ones are perfectly fine for snaps, but aren't so good for trying some of the more fancy things. If you are getting an SLR you really ought to think about continuing to save up after the initial purchase for more gear later down the line, otherwise you might find yourself a bit limited.

I just think the times right to invest a bit in a camera to get more from my photos. I'm taking more photos now than I have ever done so I'm sure I'll get plenty of use from a DSLR when I get one.

Jen, I'll stick with the camera and bundled lens for now and buy other stuff later.

That could be a big plus point for me.

Most of the weight is in the lenses though, especially if you're carrying more than one. Also, consider balance when you're holding the thing.

Indeed. Weight isn't a bad thing by any margin, aside from carrying the bugger around. If you want a (D)SLR and fancy a variety of lenses, you're going to need a dedicated backpack: awkward, but perhaps worth it if you enjoy photography enough.

I was thinking more along the lines of markg carrying stuff.

I absolutely love love love my Pansonic GF1 with the 20mm prime lens (40mm equiv). It wasn't cheap though.
