Quick bit of advice request from y'all. I have a gmail email I use for mates correspondence. It gets no spam. I have a fastmail.fm email address I've used for years which I now only use for shopping, bank, credit cards, job applications, ebay, paypal etc etc. It gets a fair bit of spam. I want to delete the fastmail account due to it being shit (16meg inbox HAHAHAHA!!) and spammy and set-up a new email address for shopping things etc.

Instead of just registering a second gmail address I was thinking of registering a .co.uk domain so that I can use an email forwarding service form the domain provider to have it send shopping email things direct to a folder in my gmail account. This would be handy as I could setup [email protected] for shopping going into one gmail folder and [email protected] to another gmail folder which is the one I could use for job applications. I would also have it so these forwarded emails wouldn't go to my gmail inbox, just their own set folders, so proper gmail email would be all that goes to my inbox. It would be good for future proofings things too as in the future if [email protected] got too spammy, I could delete that forwarder and use [email protected] instead.

This is long, geeky and boring, isn't it? Sorry...

Basically, with things setup like this, are bots gonna be able to get hold of my gmail.com email address and start spamming that? I don't want to fuck this gmail address up as it's nice just having mates correspond to it and nothing else. I can't be arsed to log into a second email address to check my shopping things (like I currently do with fastmail), as I like my android phone just blipping when gmail gets an email these days; it's so much easier.

Is this setup a good idea or has anyone a better suggestion for email management? I don't use Outlook/Thunderbird, btw, and don't intent to.

Google Domain Apps let you directly tie a domain name to a gmail account, it's how my domain email works. You get the domain's MX record updated to point at gmail, add a CNAME or something to authorise the connection, and mail drops straight in to gmail, no forwarding required.

It's all (moderately) simple to do with things like the 123-reg web interface, and Google provide step-by-step instructions. I think you're allowed up to 50 mailboxes on the free one, or something. I get 7421MB of space in the mailbox I use. Which is a weird number, but there you go.

Cheers Bik, so could I have my regular Gmail account as the only email I need to log into and then have my registered domain names sending their email to this one account via the google domain apps method? I want to have at least two domains (emails @ my bardothodol.net and also my conceived blahblah.co.uk domains) both sending mail to my current gmail account, without me having to login into multiple google accounts, as I only really check email via my android phone now and that is permanently logged into my currently solitary gmail account.

You don't need really Google domain apps - just set your domain up to forward all mail to your gMail address.

Then go into Settings on normal gMail and hit 'accounts and import' to set up sending mail from an address on that domain, if you want.

I use the 123-reg forwarding to my gmail account, no problem.

I've also made the mistake of putting the gmail address directly on a website and forgot about it for a few years. This should have killed me with spam but the filtering is so good on Gmail that barely any gets though.

No, you have to create a new account, but you can then have the original account forwarded to it. But the other thing also works.

One problem I've noticed when forwarding to gmail using the forwarding service from a domain provider is that when I send email from gmail, but "send email as" [email protected], in a outlook the recipient receives an email that says "sent from [email protected] on behalf of [email protected]", thus, disclosing my private email address! Would you guys say this is a problem which would cause my personal gmail address to get spammed?

How long have you had your gmail address, kalmar? It sounds like you would be saturated with spam by now, so maybe I don't need to really worry about spam if the gmail spam filtering is so good? Maybe I'm just being over-cautious? Do you get lots of spam direct to your gmail account, Grim, even though you use this forwarding system?

Just a note: My gmail gets about 300 spam emails per month, despite only giving the address to one person, ever (Sir Gaywood) while I was changing webhost. I don't think keeping the address private helps any.
However, I never notice as the spam filter is rather excellent. So far, it's never had a false postive or a false negative.

Hmm - I give out a different address to everyone I deal with, which are then collated into a bucket account (hosted mail service, not gmail). Only two of the est. 300 addresses I've used receive spam - and I've challenged both the companies those emails were used for and in both cases received apologies and discount vouchers! Hurrah!

I do the same with the domain I use for email. All the spam to that is a result of one address. Which of itself would be easily filtered. Bit gmail dets the lot automatically. I suppose it helps that it's all viagra ads.
