It'll be too expensive and locked down to fuck. In eighteen months when Asus release one running ChromeOS or Win7 I'll have it. Be nice to have an open source OS really get a foothold in an emerging spec market, though I doubt a touch Ubuntu or other distro would be capable as yet. You'd need to totally rethink the interface and offer something apple and clones do not.

They better pull something fucking incredible out of the bag, 'cause that just looks like a giant iPhone, both physically and OS-wise. Bor-fucking-ing.

It's a proven fact that all people ever want is the stuff they've already got, but bigger. Look at computers and music formats and... video... formats....

..

.

Hmm.

I can see the point of it, I like my iPod Touch just for the odd bit of web browsing around the house even though it's fiddly sometimes. This looks very much less fiddly. However my iPod touch also comes in the car with me and out running and I play games on it. I reckon this device will cost more but offer less overall. I might have one if I was more loaded than I am, though.

You're right! If I got one of these, it'd be for ace web browsing and reading on the bus or wherever, but I'd feel a proper plonker pulling this space-age clipboard out on the bus. The beauty of the iPhone/other small devices is they're inconspicuous. No thanks, Mr Jobs. Well, unless it turns out to be £50 and does loads of other ace stuff.

Is it wifi or 3G or what then? If it's the latter then I wonder if it will come as a sort of adjunct to an iPhone contract. I don't see many takers for a separate deal.

It's ok - you wouldn't have it for long before it got stolen from your hands.

It took me few aborted attempts to draw up the courage to pull out my ereader on the bus and that's a little over ipod sized.

Mind, I no longer live in Middlesbrough :)

$499 for the bog standard model. Probably has black and white screen, no memory and no 3G connectivity, not that you'd want that anyway because that's $30 a month - on top of your phone bill/home internet bill.

Keyboard dock for extra lols:

I really think this is a shit idea. It's a silly in-between area of the market that just isn't going to work. Who exactly is going to buy one, other than the fanboys? It's definitely not a mainstream success in the making like the iPhone/Pod, nor is it a necessary requirement like a laptop of desktop computer. Silly middle ground of uselessness. Kindle does the reading thing for much cheaper.

Kindle and ereaders in general have e-ink displays too, meaning far far less power used. Fuck reading from a clipboard sized tablet with a flickery screen.

I'm still shocked that they are using a proprietary USB port on it.

I do all my work via docking a laptop, so fiddle with monitor cables and usb hub every day.

To come home and plop it on my desk to type up stuff and is a huge deal for me.

Especially for teaching. Drop into the dock to add copy to slides and then pick it up to do the presentations & it sounds like an amazing and far cheaper replacement for the piece of shit that is 'intelligent' white boards.

That keyboard dock basically knocks out the need for a middle man PC.

TL:DR - fuck you. :)

Bah, good point.

Overall though, I seriously think it could be a boon for lecturing, teaching & presenting. To the extent where it could shoot Apple in the foot.

If it replaces the need for me to have a laptop for presentations then I can swap back to a Linux Desktop, which would be soooo nice.

Just small enough to work on slides on commute too.

Hmm, would need a wireless dongle or something for projector to be best though.

That's why you get one of these in addition to an iPhone. One device per task.

Of for Students, totally. But I'm talking about it from the point of view of being the teacher.

It'll be like being a teacher out of off of star trek.

SD cards are slow and unreliable. I don't see this as a valid argument.

And who says you'd have to replace the battery in six months' time? People say this about every Apple product every time one is released. Times I've ever had to replace a battery on any gadget ever: none. And Apple would no doubt provide a service to do so for you, or you could do it yourself. iPhones are apparently easy to take apart these days.

My hardly ever used DS Lite holds enough charge for about 2 hours.
My laptop battery has been replaced twice in 18 months.
My Xbox play and charge kit battery was replaced within the first year.
None of the phones I've owned has had a battery live over nine months.

My 5 year old iBook has a battery life of about 3.5 hours.

Thats twice I've needed this pointed out to me. I forget that SD cards are pig shit at running. There is a huge difference between SD card level memory and the stuff in the iPhone at least.
