Actually, we need a Beex darknet. I have a 24/7 Windows server at home now, so might get cracking on that.

Set up a private tracker (i.e., needs user registration / invites) and then use normal BT clients.

That's it.

I think I set one up once to fiddle with, but it was yonks ago.

MyFinger and I dabbled last year with both WASTE and Gigatribe with mixed reults. Both are private P2P networks suitable for relatively small numbers of users.

Unfortunately I can't provide links because I can't access their website from this office.

Unless of course this isn't what you meant and I'll just go back to lurking :)

Those seem to be easier to use packaged ways of doing it.

WASTE looks pretty good actually. How did you get on with it?

It seemed to work ok, I can't remember why but we decided to change to Gigatribe after trying WASTE. I think (but can't be sure) that WASTE was slow to update items available from other users.

It was a pretty short experiement, given that there were only two of us in our network! Although Doc G may have been our third member for a short while.

I'd be happy to be involved in trials again if anyone was up for it.

Waste is a pain in the arse. Re-hashes everything on load and randomly used ALL your memory!

Gigatribe was much better. Better UI, it's also free for Windows. No Linux/Mac version (or at least there wasn't). They will charge you for "Direct Connect" if you aren't capable of using a port forward or uPnP on your router. But anyone who can't do that can be talked through it in no time.

Also, I have been nagging Doc about this for approximately 100 years. And now it's his idea!

I've put Gigatribe back on now.

Egg, you're still on my friends as The_egg so should be able to just reappear if you relaunch and log in. Anyone else, PM me and I'll send you an invite to connect to me. Then you can add friends of friends (as I remember).

[edit] PM me your email addy and I can invite you.

Yeah, Waste looks a bit old, crufty, and abandoned. Gigatribe is no good as not maccable.

I'd be tempted to try this: http://www.alliancep2p.com/overview.shtml

At least as a proof of concept, even if we change to something else.

I'll sort it out when I get home on the weekend. I though this thread may catch your eye.

I will also need to 'fix' my fried HDD that contains all of my stuff (I plugged the wrong power supply into it last weekend in an amazing feat of stupidity and it went fizzle)

I also found Alliance to be bunk mate.... Gigatribe was the best we tried. The project fell away last time thanks to lack of multi platform support, or those that did support multi platform were shit.

Gah, typical.

Is alliance definitely still shit? It does at least seem to be actively developed, most of them don't...

Limewire also appears to be an option, not sure how much I'd trust it though.

They are still on v1.06 which is the version still installed on my machine. So I assume it is still shit.

A large part of me won't trust Limewire. Not sure why mind you!

Basically bittorrent but private and has a freind-to-friend mode.

Anyone tried? I'll try it this evening unless not.

Now Alliance is busy hashing my content as I left it open. Grrr... It was this shit that put me off the likes of Alliance and Waste. I don't know how Gigatribe does it, but it doesn't perform system stressing hashing to all your files.

Perhaps the answer is for me to be a SuperHub, running 10 or so different pieces of software.

I'm sure my PC and internet connection will be fine with that.

TBH I don't think it's easy to get away from (t)h(r)ashing if we want any level of privacy. And we might as well.

Right, OneSwarm seems to work, with some reservations by Myfinger about the interface :)

At the moment (until / unless we set up a contact server) you have to add people manually by exchanging keys with each one. But I think you get friends of friends automatically.

So, if anyone else wants to try it, DL from http://oneswarm.cs.washington.edu/ , click "add friend" and PM me the key, and I'll return mine.

Here's my key, post or PM yours:

edit: some tips we've found.
To see just the files a particular friend has to offer, click on their name in the friends list.

There is a "classic gui" if you don't like the web one.

I'm debating whether or not to add my music.
Is anyone interested in music, or does everybody use Spotify now?

I think the fact that the file from DavPaz to Grim... is going via me (slowly) is because one of you hasn't got the port open. Just a hunch, check it in the settings.

Yes plz on musics, I don't do spotify!
