So, is anyone going to have a crack at this?
Apparently the demo is seven gig big and is downloading at about 2kB/s worldwide, so they've not really thought it through.

Torrents, people, torrents.

Can you "be" Spock?

Or even a space pirate?

Meh:

Quote:
Q: Will there be PvP?
A: Yes. We plan for a faction vs. faction PvP ruleset, but there are also plans for a competitive PvE mechanic.

Q: Will there be PvP, PvE and RP rule set servers?
A: There will not be separate servers for PvP and PvE rulesets. Open PvP will be restricted to designated sectors of space (far-off reaches of unclaimed territory). Consensual PvP and competitive PvE will occur between the realm borders (the Neutral Zone), where players will be competing over territory and resources with the option to PvP.

Why can't I kill everyone, anywhere?

Because some people do not like being attacked by vindictive people many levels above them.

I had a very quick go this morning (I'm working from home again today) and it actually doesn't seem half bad. Took ages to download the bastard though - you can get a torrent of it on the STO website, but even so it took leaving the computer on overnight for it to download. I'll definitely be giving it a proper blast once I've finished work.

I don't think you'd like it MaliA. I get the impression that it has very much been designed for people like me: Trekkies with a passing interest in EvE that's been spoiled by all the stories about how tough it is to get into and the apparently quite 'cunt-y' player base. This seems about as straightforward to get into as World Of Warcraft.

You can design your own alien species, yes? You could make a Quagaar!

Personally, I'd want to be a hot Bajoran. Or Ezri Dax. Oh yes.

The Open Beta for this ended at 2am this morning with a monstrous Klingon invasion of Federation space, followed by the Borg appearing to clear up all the stragglers.

I didn't have time to play a huge amount of this game in the end, but what I did play was genuinely very good. It struck me as an MMORPG for more casual players, since it's perfectly possible to play solo. The secret is breaking everything up into instances, so when you warp to a system on a quest and are just playing solo, the game will automatically team you up in that system with any similarily levelled players that happen to be doing the same quest. It's not a problem for the hardcore players, since they can still only ever play with their mates (and you still have guilds in this, though they're called 'fleets') and it's ideal for the casual players as you don't have to worry about your friends jumping levels ahead of you all the time because you can't devote the time to it that they can (which was always my problem playing WoW).

I'm definitely going to end up getting the full game once it's released. There's some special subscription offers available if you pre-order, such as a full year's sub for about £75 (it's normally £8.99 per month), which I'm a bit tempted by.

I had a fiddle with the beta and despite not being much of a Star Trek fan I had quite a good time. Not £30-plus-£9-a-month good, but quite good all the same. I particularly enjoyed the space-based sections - the ships look the absolute business, even if I found the combat a little bit difficult to manage. The planet-based sections, on the other hand, didn't overly move me despite the game doing quite a nice job of making every world distinct (it might be a bit more authentic if every planet looked a lot like Southern California, mind). When the price of entry drops close to what Champions Online is currently going for (£7 or so) I might be tempted to have another crack at it.

Well, yeah, there's a fair bit of that. Not so much the horrible leet-speak nonsense, but certainly the missions involving 'kill 10 oil-slick monsters' type stuff. Doesn't stop it being fun though.

I dislike games that charge for the engine and charge a monthly fee. One of the other should be free.

Well, this is something I couldn't agree more on. I genuinely enjoyed playing the beta and so am looking forward to playing the actual game, but pre-orders are £30 for the regular version and £40 for the Deluxe edition with a load of exclusive tat thrown in, and that's before you start chucking £9 or so a month at it. I haven't paid anything out yet, I'm wondering if it might not be worth waiting for it to not sell enough to start costing a little less.

This is pretty much the going rate for most popular MMORPGs (I'm thinking specifically WoW). There are ways of making it cheaper - the price is about £75 for an annual subscription at the moment.

Didn't Lord of the Rings Online offer a lifetime pass for nan nundred when that launched? Of course, you're taking the risk it won't turn out to be a Tabula Risarizerissarizza there.

They're doing that too for about £150 and you get other benefits for the lifetime doohickey. But with the game itself, that's the best part of £200. I'd have to really fucking like a game to spend that much on it.*

*says the guy who bought an Xbox 360 Elite pretty much exclusively to play Forza 3 on it.

Of course, the £9 a month ends up saving you money, because not only do you stop buying other games, but you stop going outside.

I keep trying to play my single player games but, well they dont pay me any money and other MMO's require a subscription which this doesnt.
