I fancy a rallying game. Back in the day, I loved Colin McRae (1 & 2) on the PC but haven't really played one since.

What's the best one these days? Is Dirt a rallying game? Or have they added 'other' styles to it?

Sega Rally.

I played the demo. It's ok, but I was looking for something with a bit more depth.

CM 2005 looks like a good bet. Expensive for 5 year old XBOX1 game though

If you've got an original Xbox, then Rallisport 2 would be the way to go, but it's not on the compatibility list for the 360 which is a shame.

Richard Burns Rally for the Xbox 1, obv. The Dirt games aren't much cop for pure rallying. Sega Rally is arcade rallycross, so isn't rally either.

There is a WRC game coming to the current-gen consoles at some point. It's made by the same team who did World Superbikes (decent games) and Superstars V8 Racing (awful from the demo).

I wasn't much for that game - I found it difficult to control. This could be because I'm crap though.



The other styles (and the awful loading times) put me off Dirt. Especially when CMR2 runs nicely on my PC.

Does that Baja thingy count as a rallying game?

Sort of. It's part-rally, part-rallycross but all on desert terrain. I like it, but it's not for everyone.

What you do with this information is up to you.

The problem is that the first tier of vehicles (Baja Bugs) are awful and the races are almost impossible to win, even with a fully-upgraded car. Once you get enough XP to unlock tier 2, it's much more fun and the races are much easier to win.

I'll be the first to admit that it's a difficult game to love, and it's not for everyone. I do really like it, though.

Also, I cannot read the name without thinking of Banjos.

'Deliverance' would make quite a good computer game wouldn't it. You could have a rally section in 70s station wagons, a rafting section and an FPS shooter. I see no downsides at all.

I really miss proper rally games, but they never seemed to be particularly popular. Now they've been dropped for multi-disciplinary racing games focusing more on the differences between cars and no real overall feel.

Just give me a game where I'm alone on the course, weather battering me around on slippery, narrow, muddy paths; each side lined with painfully unforgiving trees ready to destroy you given half a mistake, and only a co-driver for directions, all the while driving at speeds you'd be banned for on public roads. Time is the competition, if you can even finish. GIMME!

What I remember from the devs/publisher talking about the two Dirt games was that rally games were really popular in Europe but nowhere else was interested, so they tried to make it popular elsewhere by adding other shit in. Except they did a piss poor job of the whole thing.

I remember reading that, too. So, yeah, the solution is obviously to ruin rally games to cater to the American 'we love watching ovals' audience.

No point. I'd never play with you lot anyway. Oh, sure, I'd say I would and make all the right noises in the build up, but come that Forza night, I'd 'forget'.

Good stuff. I hope it's good, and I hope it has proper wheel support and decent physics for the force feedback if so.

Speaking about all this, though, I'm reminded how much I really miss going to watch the rally for real. Granted, I haven't been for nearly two decades (my father used to take me as a wee lad) so my memory may be through rose tints. It was bloody ace fun, though, even with all the horrible weather and sitting around drinking coffee hot juice and eating Twix bars.

The rally bits in Trackmania United are superb fun.

I don't think new Sega Rally is particularly brilliant. It's ok but it only gets such a bumming for the name, mainly.

The proper rallying bits in Dirt 2 are pretty good, as are the rallying courses. All that eXtreme to the maX shite they put in it to appeal to numb-nuts ADHD sugar rush kids is not.

Don't forget that before doing the SBK games, Milestone did the absolutely fucking legendary Screamer series.

I lurrrved Screamer 2 as much as Rod Hull loves jelly.
