Anyone...?

Also, how does using my HD/Live on another machine work? I'm tempted to get an arcade for the fuck of it.

OK, next question....

if I get this tomorrow in cwmbran, will it definitely be the 'doesn't blow up' version?

http://tinyurl.com/yh5hakk

...given that my current one will probably still be RRoD susceptble when i get it back. How much arse is it to have a single HDD and two machines in different rooms, say if I wanted to stop playing in the lounge and move to my other room/console, is it a two minute job? It almost seems worth it for convenience and peace of mind to have two machines, if so.

/edit or... are there any good Wii games out yet?

Yeah, shitloads, but people don't like it if you point that out.

You'd certainly need both machines connected to Live. Whilst your gamertag will still be able to access any DLC you've got, if it's not on the machine it was originally downloaded on, you have to be connected to the net to ensure you're not up to shenanigans.

If you plug the hard drive/memory card with your profile on into a different 360 then it will show up and you can sign in as normal (although you'll have to turn the auto sign-in on again if you want to).
Any DLC you've bought is licensed to your profile/console, so it will all work as long as you originally bought it under your profile and you're connected to live on the new console. There is a license transfer link somewhere that I can't be bothered to dig up right now that will transfer everything you've bought under your profile to a new console (but I don't think you can pick and choose, so if you happen to have bought something on someone elses console so they can play it while you're not there, that will also get transferred to the new console and they won't be able to play it anymore).
I seem to remember someone saying that anything you've installed to the hard disk will need to be reinstalled, but I think there was some disagreement about that.

To answer your second post, as long as both machines can connect to live, then you shouldn't have any issue with just unplugging the hard drive from one and sticking it in the other, although that only applies to arcade games/DLC anyway. You shouldn't have any problems with playing disc games between the two consoles whether they're connected to live or not.

This was certainly the case when I got my latest 360. The games were still there, it just refused to do anything other than run them from disk.

OK, cheers chaps - next one then - what do MS do with my machine? Will I get it back with the original badly designed parts repaired or do they replace the shit bits with ones from a Jasper?

Very tempted to fuck off into town and get a new one right now...

I think it depends what they have lying about. My one has been ok since it was repaired, but it still has the original internal bits. I don't know if they took any steps to prevent the same problem happening again but would like to think so.

I've only ever swapped mine over for a new machine, I've never gone through MS.

You'll get a repair form detailing what they did to your machine. My money is on a new mobo and DVD drive. I have two 360s both on the LAN and I simply keep my profile on a memory card for switching between them.

So how does that affect your DLC?

If I get a new one and am mainy using that, wouldn't I have to take my profile/HDD back to my original machine when getting DLC or arcade titles? I dno't want half my dlc tied to one machine and half to the other, lest I end up in the future with one mahcine having net access and the other not, which is a possibility when we move this year.

Assuming you haven't replaced it/had it repaired again, they certainly replaced the motherboard according to the sheet I had back. I can't remember if they replaced the drive, or if they also replaced the cpu/gpu.

It was certainly much quieter on return, suggesting they'd done something.

If I hadn't shelled out over £300 in the last week on new monitor and games for it, I'd be a bit more patient about getting my old one back. Plus it's my Birthday month and I've got Bayonetta and Mass Effect 2 coming. Can't make up my mind over getting a spare, really resent paying another £110 if I'm going to be wrangling licences at any point in the future. Presently I'll also need a second wifi dongle unless I want to be constantly swapping those as well, which is ridiculous at £50.

I went through the same dilemma (should I get a spare etc) when mine packed up earlier this last year. In the end I didn't, mine was returned within 7 days and, knock on wood, hasn't had any problems yet.

That makes me a little more hopeful!

In terms of logistics and so on it was a really slick operation from start to finish. Register 360 for repair > Arrange collection for convenient time > Get email that they've received it > Get email that they've shipped it back > Received console next day.

Looking at the dates of emails and so on, they picked it up on the 18th June and I received it back on the 26th - so 9 actual days, but 7 working days.

:this:

I concur with this experience.
I was given a broken xbox by a (rich) colleague.
The drive was fooked, wouldnt open unless you hit the console, and it RROD'd / spazed out 10 -15 seconds being turned on.

I listed it on my xbox profile (where I also have my own console - touch wood coming up to 2 or more years old now with no issues, was one of the first HDMI 20gb models) and lo and behold they offered free repair. I boxed it, printed the label, and they courier came next day. Turnaround was about 10 days all in, and I was kept up to date the whole time.

MS may have fucked up with the design of the consoles, but the warranty repairs are handled 100%
I got a sheet saying new mobo, drive and a 1 month live card :)
This console was one of the earlier non HDMI ones, and I didnt get a HDMI model back sadly, so I dont know how long it will last. My gf has it at present in Swindon mainly for DVD watching :)

That will be an Opus model, which although it lacks HDMI has the same board components as the v2 Falcon 360 (which was, in turn, the intermediate model between the v1 Xephyr and the v3 Jasper). As such, it should have increased reliability.

We've had all of ours back within 7 days except for my Elite, it got sent off before Christmas and I wasn't expecting to see it back till the new year, but it turned up 8 days later in plenty of time. :)

Are all 360 power supplies interchangeable? I'm looking to get another power-brick so that I can take the 360 into another room to play without ruining all my cable-hiding efforts in the living room.

If so, does anyone have one they might be persuaded to part with (before I go looking on ebay and the like)?

re-reading that I'm not sure what I meant now :S
Anyway, it hasn't broken again since, touch wood.

No. There are three PSUs; as they move to newer 360s they release smaller/less powerful PSUs to go with it. They are forwards but not backwards compatible. So a 203W PSU from a v1 Xenon console will work on all 360s, but the newest 150W PSU will only power Jasper (v3) consoles. If a given PSU can't power a given console, it won't plug in -- there's a system of plastic nubbins on the plug itself to stop people plugging stuff in that's going to asplode.

(More info on revisions and wattages.)
