There is basically the old Zune 120, and some silly Archos things, mainly designed for videos.

Is there any firmware replacements for the ipod that let you do all the stuff apple won't?

Being able to just plug it in and put mp3s on it. Not having to use itunes, and it not bitching about me wanting to use the same one on different computers/OSs. Oh, and being able to easilly take songs off it.

What Stu said, then. Although I suspect messing about with custom firmware flashes could end up being more painful for you than just using iTunes in manually managed music mode.

My iPod shuffle kept crashing under iTunes. I now have to use Winamp to sync it. Stupid iPods.

Hmm - you know how you can get one of those external disk caddies with a little IDE/SATA:USB interface in them? I can't imagine it would be difficult to whack the gubbins from a simple MP3 player in there and add a battery and headphone socket.

Must admit, although the Apple laptops are pretty expensive, the "competition" in that article is fucking bollocks, and either more expensive or a similar price and lacking features.
