Hi all,

For Christmas Dinner this year, I have been tasked with assembling a playlist of appropriate music. Now we all know the usual chrimbo tunes and frankly, they bore me. So I'm looking for recommendations of festive tunes that maybe might have been overlooked, forgotten or plain unnoticed by me. I'm looking for traditional, modern, classical, instrumental, whatever, as long a I don't have to resort to Slade, Wizzard and Cliff.

Lend a hand, would ya?

You'll recognise the second one when you hear it.

Never been particularly keen on any Christmas music - Christmas Time Again by Extreme is good for severe cheesiness but you can't beat Vaughn Monroe's 'Let it snow', mainly because it reminds me of Die Hard though.

I hate it too. The awful saxophone bit, her grating voice. But it fits Mr Paz's criteria (as 'good' wasn't one of the requirements)

Ah, of course. I didn't know what it was called :)

I really like that Elton John one (Step in Christmas?), despite myself

It reminds me of my retail days where it was always on the Christmas tape selection sent from head office.. Did my head in hearing it about 29 times in a day!

'Mele Kelikimaka (Christmas in Hawaii)'

My spelling might be a bit off. Anyway, this is my fave Xmas song (Fairytale of New York is not allowed in any list of favourites or it gets dull). It's ridiculously jaunty.

There are good versions of the above song by The Andrews Sisters and KT Tunstall.

Also, 2000 Miles by The Pretenders

And Sufjan Stevens has a great set of Xmas songs. Some are traditional (I particularly like his version of "Once in Royal David's City") as well as some other fun songs, such as "Come on! Let's Boogey to the Elf Dance!" and "Get Behind Me, Santa!"

:D

How about "Don't Let The Bells End" by The Darkness?

Ever since making my post above, I have had the "Mele Kelikimaka" song in my head.

It's so awesome, but can it go away now please? It's catchier than Ebola.

The BBC (Bless 'em) have a page already set up for alternative Christmas songs.

FUCKING THIS. The Chieftains are made of awesome. Their Christmas album (the Bells of Dublin?) is a staple of my family's Yuletide celebrations.

You might also look up 'Mannheim Steamroller' (80s synth versions of Christmas tunes!)
