Does anyone know of any easy way to find out crime stats for a location? Like an HPI check, but for a house. This new OnePlace thing on DirectGov is pants, and I can't really be bothered ringing the police just now.

I suppose I could get contents and car insurance quotes as a guide.

No, that's much better, ta. OnePlace doesn't actually seem to link to that, absurdly. 298 recorded crimes in the area (at least 2k on one side and about 1.5k high, but the top-right chopped off) in the last year.

36 burglaries, 9 robberies, 41 vehicle, 46 violence. Not bad.

Although hooray, the place I live now is twice as good for vehicle crime, and the same for burglary. So that's my car insurance through the roof then.

How do you have an average number of crimes in an area?

Edit: actually read the site: an average per month over a three month period? why?

That's a very short term view of the problem. Think of the savings in fuel and road tax once your car gets stolen.

They'll all be fiddled anyway. At least, in The Wire they're fiddled.

According to that site the centre of Lancaster is more dangerous than some of the most violent and dangerous places in London. So I wouldn't base to much emphasis on what it says.

Christ. The search field on that site is so big and yet so simultaneously bland my mind filtered it out as just a header. I was looking around for ages trying to see what the hell I was supposed to do.

You won't make it to 250 posts if you say that too often round here.

And in some folks' eyes, you've already said it once too often ;)
