I knew I shouldn't have said anything in that Mac thread. Now my iBook seems determined to asplode itself.

Out of the blue, it wouldn't start up, just showing a black screen and whirring its fan pointlessly despite not being hot.

Then it would start up, and the screen was lit and the startup chime played, but nothing was displayed.

THEN it would start up, boot normally... and then after an indeterminate amount of time (within ten minutes) the screen just blanks (sometimes with a brief flash of a horizontal line) and no longer responds to anything except me holding the power button down to force it to power off.

If I close the lid while it's working, though, it doesn't go to sleep like it should either.

I would say that it's finally died, except for the fact that it works perfectly fine up until it craps out.

The nearest match to this problem is this one.

Thoughts anyone?

£20 for your battery.

Before that do the usual, zap the pram and video memory, reseat the ram and run disk first aid on it in target mode if you can.

Look how much use your turtleneck is now. I bet you've had to leave the coffee shop too.

Well, followed the bodge on that website, taped a 5p and 10 euro cent together (they fit quite well) and with those wrapped in tape, stuffed them under the black wire and then more tape to hold them in place.

I'm using it right now, so far so good. Will leave it running and check in on it to see if it's still working, though.

TBH, not that optimistic, no matter how confident the author was (and his claim that it was still going strong over two years later). And a small part of me almost hoped that *was* it, so I had an excuse to buy a MacBook.

Amusing that it's basically the RROD problem :)

If that "fixes" it you should definitely just resolder the device, which will be more reliable.

No soldering iron or heat gun, alas. And from the side that I accessed (can't speak for the underside of the board) none of the connections appeared damaged. But then, they are absolutely tiny.

And it's still working from when I first booted it after putting it all back together.

EDIT: 9pm, still working. Was asleep for about two hours but woke up fine.
