Dear world,

Craig has legally acquired for me some film files in MKV format, for my convalescence. I would like to watch them on the TV for maximum sofa-lounging, and was wondering if there was a way of streaming them to the Tv via the Eggbox or the PS3? I'm looking for the most painless way as I can't faff around with it at the moment. the files are on my Mac, but I could steam them from a PC if needs be. If I can't stream them as is, is there a way to convert them into something stream-able, as I can stream other file formats, these ones are just refusing to play nicely. EDIT: more precisely it doesn't even see that they are there.

Are you on wireless? I find streaming stuff to the ps3 really hit and miss over wireless and it's only 4ft away from the router.

For mkv files I use mkv2vob, check the box to split to 4gb files for fat32 then drop it on a memory stick and play it that way. You can set it up so it plays files consecutively so there's only a slight pause between files if you do have to split them.

Edit linky for mkv2vob...

I use Connect360 to let the Eggbox stream things from the Mac. It works extremely well.

I don't know if the Eggbox will play MKV files without converting them (it does play most things though) but if not, I use VisualHub on the mac to convert them fairly painlessly.

I've got TVersity and I think it'll stream them, you just need to select the option to always transcode the files in the directory the files live in.

A Windows program called mkv2vob can convert the files into something the PS3 can see. It's just a case of browsing to the file and pressing "go".

I wish I'd thought of that.

I can confirm that the MKV2VOB application is an excellent one. Oh yes.

I has converted my MKV to files that will now play through the Media Center (sic) extender on the xbox and will properly thumbnail. Also.
