Hello.

I got home last night, from our triumphant music quizzing, and when I flicked the light switch in the kitchen there was a minor explosion and all the lights in the flat went out. This is obviously a fuse issue, as everything else in the flat works apart from the lights. So, I need to replace the fuse in my lighting circuit.

Easy enough.

Apart from I forgot to look and see which one of the big chunky fuse thingies corresponds to my lighting circuit.

So, great people of Beex, can you let me know what I am likely to need to purcahse from Robert Dyas?

Other than a torch.

Who's Robert Dyas?

Anyway, 5A fuse wire, in all likelyhood.

Did it not just trip?

Or did you flip the main light switch in the fuse box back?

Just ask the man at the shop he'll probably know

I knew I shouldn't have left such an open question... doh!

Nick - it's only got one switch, as it's an old fuse box. That switch is still stuck at 'ON', so it'll be the fuses. I seem to recall it being solid fuses and not fuse wires, but my recollection is hazy at best. I might actually just go home and check tonight before wasting my time buying up tons of different fuses.

Arse.

We don't have cartridge fuses in this country for domestic electrics, I'll be very surprised if it is. The big chunky things are re-wireable fuse bodies, you need a card with the different thicknesses of fuse wire on it, choose the one corresponding to the label.

If by cartridge fuses, you mean like what a plug has, then the in laws place has these for the lights, and also the emersion heater. I have had to change them at least twice!

I have them, but my fuse box is only 10 months old.

I bought some assorted fuse wires for 69p on my way home, and the 5A one, as suggested by kalmar, worked a treat.

Huzzah!

Plus changing shit like that makes you feel manly, which is ace. I still remember fondly having to kick down a door.

*reminisces*

Me and two chums went on holiday to a house in Cornwall, and when we got there the key the woman left didn't work.
I had a crack at unlocking the window with a credit card, and bugger me if it didn't work first try.
